Claude vs ChatGPT

Claude leads ChatGPT on coding benchmarks and in most 2026 writing tests, while ChatGPT wins on image generation, voice, its free tier and its sheer number of features. Both cost $20 a month at the main paid tier; as of Nov 6, 2026 ChatGPT also sells cheaper and costlier tiers.

As of Nov 6, 2026, Claude is the stronger choice for coding and long writing, while ChatGPT is the better all-in-one tool: it makes images, has a more capable voice mode, gives far more free use, and has more features overall. Both main paid plans cost $20 a month (Claude Pro and ChatGPT Plus). Zapier's 2026 review calls flagship quality "essentially at parity", naming ChatGPT for users who want an all-in-one toolkit and Claude for coding and sophisticated writing (Zapier). CNET's 2026 roundup names Claude its best overall chatbot, with "No image or video generator" as a con (CNET).

Verdict by task

Writing

Claude wins in the published 2026 tests. In Tom's Guide's Sep 24, 2026 face-off of five everyday prompts, Claude Opus 5.5 beat ChatGPT-6 in four rounds, including a rewrite meant to sound human; ChatGPT won the open-ended "life system" round, and the tester found ChatGPT "generally more streamlined" (Tom's Guide). In an Aug 27, 2026 test of ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini as editors of the same draft, the tester would choose Claude (Tom's Guide). Zapier gives Claude creative writing but credits ChatGPT with better tools for long-form drafting (Zapier). Tone is a matter of taste; try both on your own text.

Coding

Claude leads on the measured boards. On Terminal-Bench 4.0 (Nov 6, 2026), Claude Code with Claude Opus 5.5 scores 64.85% against 58.18% for Codex with GPT-6.1 Sol or GPT-6 Astra, and the confidence intervals do not overlap. Opus 5.5 is also first on WebDev Arena at 1810, against 1773 for GPT-6 Astra. In the 2026 Stack Overflow survey, 65.5% of respondents had used Claude Code in the past year and 29.5% OpenAI Codex. ChatGPT's counterpoints are real: the Codex run on GPT-6.1 Sol cost $634 against $4,719 for Claude's, and Codex comes with every ChatGPT plan, Free included, while Claude Code needs a paid plan (ChatGPT pricing; Claude pricing). The full comparison is Claude Code vs Codex.

Reasoning and knowledge

Close, with Claude ahead on most boards. The Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index gives Claude Opus 5.5 (max) 59 and GPT-6 Astra (max) 57; Arena's text board puts Opus 5.5 third at 1509 and OpenAI's best entry 22nd at 1485. OpenAI wins ARC-AGI-2: GPT-6 Astra scores 95.0% against 93.3% for Opus 5.5. The full list is on Claude Benchmarks.

ChatGPT is easier to reach for research, since Deep Research is on its Free plan (ChatGPT pricing), while Claude's Research is for paid plans only (Use research on Claude). Web Search with cited sources is on every Claude plan, Free included (Web search). No independent 2026 test of the two research modes was found, so quality is a matter of taste.

Images and video

ChatGPT wins outright. ChatGPT Images 2.6 arrived on Nov 4, 2026, with GIF animations (ChatGPT release notes), and OpenAI's image models hold the top five places on Arena's text-to-image board. Claude does not generate photos or illustrations; it draws diagrams, charts and interactive visuals in code (Can Claude produce images?; see Image Generation). Neither makes video now: OpenAI discontinued the Sora apps on Apr 26, 2026 (OpenAI Help Center).

Voice

ChatGPT wins. Its Live voice can listen and speak at the same time and use search and memory (ChatGPT Voice), "Voice with video" is on Go, Plus and Pro, and Plus gets up to 3 hours a day of GPT-Live-1. Claude's Voice Mode is a beta on every plan with a limited set of voices, its use counts toward normal limits, and Claude Fable is not available in it (Use voice mode).

Price

A tie at $20; ChatGPT wins below and above it. Claude Pro is $20 a month, or $17 a month billed annually ($200 up front), the same as ChatGPT Plus, which has no annual option (What is ChatGPT Plus?). ChatGPT also sells Go, a lower-cost plan (its price was not shown on OpenAI's pages on Nov 6, 2026; Zapier lists it at $8 a month with ads), and Pro tiers at $100, $200 and $500. Claude's higher plans are Claude Max at $100 and Claude Ultra at $200 (Claude pricing).

Usage limits and context

ChatGPT gives more messages; Claude reads more at once. ChatGPT Free offers "Unlimited text chats" with GPT-6 Luna (ChatGPT pricing), while Claude Free has limited use every five hours and every week, and paid Claude plans have a five-hour and a weekly limit (Claude Usage Limits; How do usage and length limits work?). Zapier names easy-to-hit limits as Claude's downside (Zapier). On context, Claude's plans offer up to 1M tokens depending on the model, against 54K (Instant) and 256K (reasoning) on ChatGPT Plus (ChatGPT pricing).

Privacy

A near tie on consumer plans. Both train on Free and paid individual chats unless you opt out: Claude marks training "Opt-out" on Free, Pro, Max and Ultra (Claude pricing), and OpenAI says content on Free, Go, Plus and Pro is used to train its models, with an opt-out (ChatGPT pricing). ChatGPT has been testing ads on Free and Go since Feb 9, 2026; Plus and above have none (ChatGPT release notes). Business plans of both do not train on your data by default (Claude Privacy and Data Use; ChatGPT Business overview).

Features

ChatGPT has more. Its 2026 additions include ChatGPT Work, Sites, always-on "dots", Health, Finances, shopping and restaurant bookings, and ChatGPT for Word, Excel and PowerPoint on every plan (ChatGPT release notes). Claude has Projects, Artifacts, Memory, Connectors, Claude in Chrome and Claude for Microsoft 365 on paid plans, and a US-only Personal Finance beta since Nov 5, 2026 (Introducing Personal Finance in Claude).

When to choose ChatGPT

Choose ChatGPT if you want images, voice conversations or one app for many jobs. It is also the better free assistant: unlimited text chats, Deep Research, image creation and Codex all come at $0 (ChatGPT pricing). It suits anyone who wants a plan under $20, or a $500 plan with OpenAI's fastest modes. If you already live in Office, ChatGPT for Word, Excel and PowerPoint works on the Free plan.

When to choose Claude

Choose Claude if most of your work is code or long documents. Claude Code with Opus 5.5 leads the public Terminal-Bench 4.0 board, and Claude won most rounds in the 2026 writing tests cited above. Claude also reads more at once, up to 1M tokens on paid plans, and Pro is the only $20 plan of the two with annual billing. If you hit Claude's limits often, compare Claude Pro vs Max before switching. For tasks where neither fits, see When to Use Something Else.

What reviewers found

In a Jun 8, 2026 video, Igor Pogany of The AI Advantage scored the two apps category by category without naming model versions; the video predates Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6. He gave ChatGPT pricing and limits, estimating that Claude's $20 plan cuts you off at roughly 30 to 50% of the use ChatGPT's allows, and gave Claude writing out of the box, which he found sounds "less robotic" than ChatGPT's. That is one reviewer's estimate; Anthropic publishes no message counts.

He also gave ChatGPT voice input, calling Claude's "flaky" with accents and other languages, and image generation, where Claude has none. Elsewhere in the video he gave Claude documents and presentations, skills, browser tasks through its Chrome extension and agentic work through Cowork, named Claude the overall winner, and said many viewers should simply use both.

Peter Yang reached the opposite overall verdict in an Aug 26, 2026 comparison of ten uses, run on Claude Opus 5 and Fable 5 and on ChatGPT before GPT-6 Astra came out: ChatGPT was "the clear winner" for him. He found Opus 5 "a little bit too judgmental" in conversation, preferred ChatGPT's writing, coding help, browser use and voice, and gave Claude only design and planning, where Fable 5 spotted a staffing gap in his planning document that ChatGPT missed.
