When to Use Something Else

Claude is not the best choice for everything: as of Nov 6, 2026 it cannot generate images or video, has no open weights to run locally, offers no free coding agent and a smaller free plan than ChatGPT or Gemini, and its API sells no realtime voice, speech, image or embedding models; this page names the better tool for each of those jobs, and where Claude is the strong choice.

Use something other than Claude when you need images or video made, a real-time spoken conversation with your camera on, a model you can download and run on your own machine, the most you can get for free, an assistant built into Gmail and Google Docs or into a Microsoft 365 tenant, answers with a citation behind every line, or speech, image or embedding models through one API. Claude does none of those, or does them less well, as of Nov 6, 2026, and each section below names the alternative with the reason and its source. The last sections say where Claude is the strong choice, also with sources, so the trade is visible from both sides.

Images

Claude does not generate photos or illustrations. Anthropic's help center says so plainly, and says Claude builds diagrams, charts and interactive visuals from code instead (Can Claude produce images?); see Image Generation. Every major rival makes images: ChatGPT (Images 2.6 since Nov 4, 2026), Gemini (Nano Banana), Microsoft Copilot, Grok Imagine, Meta AI and Perplexity. On Arena's text-to-image board, updated Nov 2, 2026, OpenAI's models held ranks 1 to 5, Microsoft's MAI-Image-2.6 was sixth and Gemini's Nano Banana seventh; Anthropic had no entry. For images, use ChatGPT, Gemini or a dedicated tool such as Midjourney.

Video

Claude makes no video. Google's Veo 3.1 makes 1080p and 4K clips with sound, in Gemini, Flow and the API, and Grok Imagine makes clips up to 15 seconds (Grok). OpenAI is no longer an option here: it discontinued the Sora app on Apr 26, 2026 and the Sora API on Sep 24, 2026.

Live voice conversations

Claude has a voice mode on every plan, but Anthropic still calls it a beta, with "a preset, limited selection of voices", and its help page mentions no camera or screen sharing (Use voice mode). ChatGPT's Live voice "can listen and speak at the same time" and uses web search and memory (ChatGPT Voice), and ChatGPT lists voice with video on Go, Plus and Pro (ChatGPT pricing). Google offers Gemini Live on its free plan (Gemini subscriptions). If you want to talk while showing the assistant what is in front of you, use ChatGPT or Gemini.

Running a model on your own machine

There is no downloadable Claude. Anthropic's models are offered through its API and on Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud and Microsoft Foundry, never as weights (Models overview); see Claude on Cloud Platforms. Anthropic's CEO wrote on Jul 27, 2026 that the company has never advocated banning open-weights models (Our position on open-weights models), but it releases none of its own. For offline use, private hardware, or fine-tuning a model yourself, use an open-weights family such as Llama, Gemma, Qwen, DeepSeek or Mistral; Ollama's library lists them by popularity, and lists no Claude model.

Getting the most for free

Claude's Free plan gives "limited usage every 5 hours and every week" and does not include Claude Code (Plans and pricing). ChatGPT Free lists "unlimited text chats with GPT-6" (subject to abuse guardrails), plus image creation, voice, deep research and Codex (ChatGPT pricing). Gemini's free plan includes image generation, Deep Research, Gemini Live and 15 GB of storage (Gemini subscriptions). For coding, Google's Antigravity has a $0 plan with an agent and unlimited Tab completions, and GitHub Copilot Free gives 2,000 completions a month. CNET, which named Claude its best chatbot overall, listed as its first con that "Claude's best features are behind a paywall" (Best AI Chatbots of 2026).

On price, Claude's first paid plan is Pro at $20 a month, or $17 billed annually. Google AI Plus costs $4.99 and SpaceX's X Subscription Plus, with Grok and Cursor, $8. Zapier lists ChatGPT Go at $8 a month with ads (OpenAI's own page showed no price when read). See Claude Plans and Pricing.

Hitting usage limits

Heavy users meet Claude's limits sooner than some rivals' because one pool covers chat and Claude Code and resets every five hours and every week, with no published message counts (Claude Usage Limits). Zapier's roundup names Claude best for writing and coding and gives its downside as being easy to hit limits (The best AI chatbots). If you need guaranteed volume, the Claude API bills by the token with no five-hour window, and ChatGPT says its Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit for Codex. Tips are on How to Make Claude Usage Limits Last.

Google Workspace and Microsoft 365

If your day is Gmail, Docs and Drive, Gemini is built into them: Google AI Pro at $19.99 lists "Gemini in Gmail, Docs, Vids, and more" (Gemini subscriptions). Claude reaches the same places from outside, through Google connectors and a beta add-on for Docs, Sheets and Slides (Claude for Google Workspace).

In a company on Microsoft 365, Microsoft 365 Copilot is already in the tenant at $30 a user a month for enterprises, and it can run Claude: Microsoft turns Claude models on by default for most commercial customers outside the EU, EFTA and UK (Microsoft Learn). Claude's own add-ins for Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Outlook are on all paid Claude plans (Claude for Microsoft 365), so the choice is about where your company's data and admin controls already live. See Claude vs Gemini and Claude vs Microsoft Copilot.

Research with sources on every line

Claude has Web Search and Research, whose results carry citations. Perplexity is built around search first: its free plan is "Search only with accurate answers and citations" (Perplexity pricing), Pro promises "10x as many citations per answer" (What is Perplexity Pro?), and CNET named it best for research (Best AI Chatbots of 2026). Perplexity Pro also offers Claude Sonnet 5.5 among its models, so you can keep Claude's writing and get Perplexity's search. See Claude vs Perplexity.

Breaking news from X

Grok "Searches the web and X live" with real-time X integration for news and trends (Grok). For what people are saying on X in the last hour, Grok is the tool. See Claude vs Grok.

API jobs Claude's API does not do

The Claude API is text and image in, text out. Its pricing page lists no image generation, audio, realtime voice, text-to-speech, transcription or fine-tuning (Pricing), and Anthropic "does not offer its own embedding model", pointing to Voyage AI instead (Embeddings). OpenAI sells realtime voice, transcription, text-to-speech, image generation and embeddings; Google sells live audio, text-to-speech, image, music and embedding models. If an app needs those, use one of them, or pair Claude with them. See Claude API vs OpenAI API.

Very cheap bulk API work

At the smallest size Claude is not more expensive: Claude Haiku 5.5 costs $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output for prompts up to 100K tokens, the same as OpenAI's gpt-6-luna. The gap is a step up. OpenAI's gpt-6.1-terra costs $1 and $5, half of Claude Sonnet 5.5's $2 and $10; Google's Gemini 2.5 Flash-Lite costs $0.10 and $0.40, and Google gives a standing free tier on several Flash models, where Anthropic gives new users only "a small amount of free credits" (Pricing). Anthropic also says its tokenizer since Claude 4.7 produces about 30% more tokens for the same text, so equal list prices do not mean equal bills. For big classification or extraction runs, test Gemini Flash, gpt-6.1-terra or an open model like DeepSeek; on Artificial Analysis's index run, DeepSeek V4.1 Flash cost $0.60 a task against $7.76 for Gemini 4 Carbon.

Benchmarks where others lead

Claude does not top every measurement. On Arena's text board (Oct 28, 2026), Gemini 4 Carbon (1528) and Gemini 4 Argon (1520) ranked above Claude Opus 5.5 (1509). On ARC-AGI-2, GPT-6 Astra (95.0%) and GPT-6.1 Sol (94.2%) scored above Claude Opus 5.5 (93.3%), and Claude had no ARC-AGI-3 result. On GPQA Diamond GPT-6 Astra led at 96.1%, and on Scale AI's Humanity's Last Exam board GPT-6 Astra was first. On Artificial Analysis's Intelligence Index, Gemini 4 Carbon scored 60 to Opus 5.5's 59. For hard math and science questions, GPT-6 Astra is worth trying. More in Claude Benchmarks.

Coding agents with something Claude Code lacks

Claude Code has no free tier, no as-you-type autocomplete and no published CLI source. OpenAI's Codex is open source, included in ChatGPT Free and far cheaper per Terminal-Bench result (Claude Code vs Codex); GitHub Copilot starts at $10 with unlimited completions (Claude Code vs GitHub Copilot); Cursor is a full editor with Tab autocomplete and models from many makers (Claude Code vs Cursor); Google's Antigravity has a free plan (Claude Code vs Gemini CLI).

Where Claude is the strong choice

  • Coding agents. Claude Code with Claude Opus 5.5 held first place on Terminal-Bench 4.0 (64.85%) on Nov 6, 2026, and Claude Code was the most used coding agent in the 2026 Stack Overflow survey (65.5%).
  • Building web apps. Claude Opus 5.5 ranked first on Arena's WebDev board (1810), the only model whose rank spread was 1 to 1.
  • Writing. Zapier names Claude best for writing and coding (The best AI chatbots); Tom's Guide picked Claude as the writing coach for an old draft (Tom's Guide, Aug 27, 2026) and as overall winner over ChatGPT-6 in four of five everyday prompts (Tom's Guide, Sep 24, 2026).
  • An all-round assistant. CNET named Claude its best overall AI chatbot (updated Oct 6, 2026).
  • Long documents through the API. Claude 4.6 and later models bill the full 1M-token context at the standard rate; OpenAI charges more above 272K tokens and Gemini 3.1 Pro above 200K (Pricing).
  • Hard knowledge questions on one board. Artificial Analysis's own Humanity's Last Exam runs put Claude Opus 5.5 first at 61.4%, though Scale AI's board, which lacks Opus 5.5, puts GPT-6 Astra first.

Frequently asked questions

What can't Claude do? As of Nov 6, 2026, Claude cannot generate images or video, cannot be downloaded and run locally, has no video in voice mode, and its API sells no realtime voice, speech, image generation or embedding models. For those, ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, open-weights models or the OpenAI and Gemini APIs are the better choice.

Is there a free alternative to Claude? Yes. ChatGPT Free and Gemini's free plan both offer more free use than Claude Free, including image generation, and Google's Antigravity and GitHub Copilot Free give free coding help where Claude Code needs a paid Claude plan.

Can Claude make images? No. Claude can draw diagrams, charts and interactive visuals with code, but it does not generate photos or illustrations; ChatGPT, Gemini and Midjourney do.

Can I run Claude locally? No. Anthropic does not release Claude's weights; Claude runs only through Anthropic's apps and API and on Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud and Microsoft Foundry. Open-weights models such as Llama, Gemma, Qwen or DeepSeek run locally.

What is Claude's biggest weakness? In the reviews cited on this page, cost and limits: CNET's first con for Claude is that its best features are paid, and Zapier says it is easy to hit Claude's limits. CNET's second con is that Claude has no image or video generator.

When is Claude the better choice? For coding agents, building web apps, writing and long documents: Claude Code led Terminal-Bench 4.0 and Claude Opus 5.5 led Arena's WebDev board on Nov 6, 2026, and CNET and Zapier both rank Claude first for writing or overall.
