Voice Mode
Claude voice mode lets you talk with Claude out loud and hear it answer, on every Claude plan including Free, in the iOS and Android apps, Claude Desktop and the web. It is a beta, uses preset voices only and counts toward your usage limit.
Claude voice mode is a spoken, two-way conversation with Claude: tap the sound wave icon, talk, and Claude answers aloud; it is a beta on all plans (Free, Pro, Max, Ultra, Team and Enterprise) on iOS, Android, Claude Desktop and the web, and works best on a phone (as of Nov 6, 2026). It can use web search and your connected apps (Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs, Slack) while you talk, and the transcript lands in your chat history.

How do I talk to Claude?
- Open the Claude app on your phone (or Claude Desktop, or claude.ai).
- Tap the sound wave icon next to the message box.
- Speak, either hands-free (the default) or in push-to-talk mode.
- Go back to typing whenever you like: you can switch between voice and typing within one conversation.
Choose the voice, the mode and the spoken language under Settings > Capabilities > Voice settings (Use voice mode).
Voices and languages
Claude speaks only in a set of preset voices; Anthropic does not offer custom voices, to prevent cloning a real person's voice. It understands and speaks many languages, with languages other than English in beta; set yours in Settings > Capabilities > Voice > Spoken language (Use voice mode).
Anthropic's Oct 29, 2026 video on the mobile apps lists the latest changes: voice mode responds more quickly and hears you better in a noisy room or when you speak quietly, works on more Android phones, works with Apple CarPlay on iPhone, and sounds more natural in languages other than English (Claude's new mobile app updates are here).
What can Claude do in voice mode?
Voice mode is the same Claude with a microphone. It can:
- search the web for current answers (Web Search);
- read your calendar, email and documents through Connectors such as Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs and Slack (the Free plan can connect one tool);
- use the model you last chatted with, so a voice chat continues where text left off.
Claude Fable is the exception: it is not available in voice mode (Use voice mode). Anthropic's blog has pitched voice mode for thinking through hard problems aloud (Think through hard problems in voice mode).
Voice mode versus dictation
Voice mode is a full conversation in which Claude talks back. Dictation only turns your speech into typed text for you to send. In Cowork and Claude Code, only dictation is available, and dictation is not yet available on the Linux desktop app (Use voice mode; Download Claude).
Limits
Voice conversations count toward your plan's usage limits like typed ones (Use voice mode). Anthropic publishes no separate hour cap for voice. Because the feature is a beta, expect changes and occasional rough edges in recognition, especially in languages other than English.
Privacy
Transcripts of voice chats are saved to your chat history like any other chat, where you can delete them. The general rules on training and retention apply; see Claude Privacy and Data Use.
Frequently asked questions
