Artifacts

Claude artifacts are documents, decks, designs, dashboards, websites and small interactive apps that Claude builds in a panel beside the chat, saved in the Artifacts tab and shareable by link. They are on every Claude plan, including Free.

A Claude artifact is a piece of work Claude makes to be shown or reused (a document, a deck, a design, a dashboard, a single-page website, a diagram or a small interactive tool) that opens in a panel beside the conversation and is saved in the Artifacts tab of the sidebar; artifacts are on every plan, including Free (as of Nov 6, 2026). Claude makes one when the content is substantial (the Help Center says typically over 15 lines), self-contained and likely to be edited or reused. Artifacts first appeared as a feature preview in Jun 2024 and were rebuilt on Sep 16, 2026, when Claude Design, Claude Slides and Claude Docs moved into every conversation.

Quick facts

What can a Claude artifact be?

The Help Center lists documents, code snippets, single-page websites, images (drawn as code, such as SVG), diagrams and flowcharts, dashboards and small interactive tools (What are artifacts?). Claude.com adds animations and decks (Artifacts). Four templates give some artifacts a fixed shape:

  • Docs: collaborative documents where Claude drafts sections, asks questions and comments on its choices.
  • Slides: decks built from a report or a file, exportable to PowerPoint, Google Slides or PDF.
  • Design: designs and prototypes, covered on Claude Design.
  • Dashboards (beta) and Motion (beta): live data dashboards and coded animations rendered to MP4, covered on Claude Dashboards and Motion.

Artifacts are not image generation: Claude writes code (HTML, SVG, React) that draws the result, and it does not make photographs or painted illustrations (Image Generation).

The Claude app in a project called Project Operations. A user who attached a Data TXT file asks Claude to build a scatter plot of page load time in seconds against user session duration in minutes; Claude replies with a React component card, Scatter Plot for User Engagement Metrics. On the right a panel with Preview and Code tabs shows the code: imports from recharts, a data array of pageLoadTime and sessionDuration pairs, and a ResponsiveContainer with a ScatterChart. The model menu reads Claude 3.5 Sonnet.

How do I turn artifacts on?

Artifacts need cloud code execution:

  1. Open Settings > Capabilities (Team and Enterprise owners: Organization settings > Capabilities).
  2. Turn on "Code execution and file creation", named "Create and edit files" in the updated layout.
  3. Ask Claude for something you want to keep, such as "a one-page budget tracker" or "a deck from this report".

Everything Claude makes is saved in the Artifacts tab in the sidebar (What are artifacts?).

Editing an artifact

An artifact can be changed by asking in the chat, by editing a templated artifact directly on the canvas (also on a phone), by leaving comments for Claude, or by highlighting text in a doc and choosing "Edit with Claude" (Artifacts). When an artifact shows an error, "Try fixing with Claude" asks Claude to repair it, which the Help Center says does not always work. Artifacts can draw on Connectors such as Google Drive, Salesforce, HubSpot, Notion or Asana, but connector tools that need approval for every action are not available inside an artifact (What are artifacts?).

How do I share a Claude artifact?

Artifacts start private. On Free, Pro, Max and Ultra, a shared link lets anyone with it view the artifact; on Team and Enterprise, links stay inside the organization unless an Owner or Primary Owner turns on External sharing under Organization settings > Artifacts (Artifacts). A Claude Doc can be shared with named people, the organization or anyone with the link, and viewers and editors need a Claude account. In Anthropic's Nov 4, 2026 video, people added to a shared artifact start as commenters, and a contributor can enter information or check off tasks without changing the artifact itself (Collaborate on artifacts in Claude). Embed codes for published artifacts arrived on Aug 21, 2025 for Free, Pro and Max.

Artifacts made in chat before Sep 16, 2026 are now "legacy artifacts": they still work and can still be published, and a published one on an individual plan can be remixed (Copy, paste the code into a new chat, describe the change), but new legacy artifacts cannot be made (What are artifacts?). The Help Center advises remixing only artifacts from people you trust. It does not describe a public gallery of artifacts on Nov 6, 2026.

AI-powered artifacts (apps that call Claude)

An artifact can call Claude itself, which turns it into a small AI app: a tutor, a quiz, a writing tool. People who use a shared AI-powered artifact sign in with their own Claude account, no API key is needed, and the usage counts against each user's own plan, so the creator pays nothing for it (What are artifacts?). Anthropic announced this as a beta in a post dated Jul 25, 2025, extended to Team and Enterprise on Jul 31, 2025. New artifacts ask permission the first time they need Claude; legacy ones follow the setting "AI-powered artifacts" ("Artifacts that use Claude" in the updated layout) in Settings > Capabilities.

Connecting apps and storing data in an artifact is limited to paid plans (Pro, Max, Ultra, Team and Enterprise). Stored data is text only, up to 20 MB per artifact, with personal and shared storage kept apart; the Help Center warns to check which kind an artifact uses before entering anything sensitive, and unpublishing a legacy artifact deletes its stored data for good.

Limits

Artifacts count toward the usage limits, and a full deck or design uses more than a short chat (Claude Design). Claude Design's help page lists known problems on Nov 6, 2026: comments that do not always persist, lag with large codebases, unreliable editing by several people at once and no version history yet (Get started with Claude Design).

Frequently asked questions

Are Claude artifacts free? Yes. Claude artifacts, including the Docs, Slides and Design templates, are on the Free plan as of Nov 6, 2026; Dashboards need a paid plan and Motion needs Team or Enterprise.

Why does Claude not show artifacts? Claude needs "Code execution and file creation" (or "Create and edit files") turned on in Settings > Capabilities to make artifacts; on Team and Enterprise an owner turns it on for the organization first.

Who pays when people use my shared Claude app? Each person using an AI-powered Claude artifact signs in and spends their own plan's usage; the creator is not charged.

Can anyone see a shared Claude artifact? On Claude's individual plans, anyone with the link can view it. On Team and Enterprise, only people in the organization can, unless an owner allows external sharing.

Can Claude artifacts be exported? Claude artifacts export to PowerPoint, Google Slides, PDF, MP4 and HTML, depending on the kind of artifact.
