Claude Tag

Claude Tag is how Claude works in Slack: you tag @Claude in a channel, thread or direct message and it does the task with your organization's tools, then reports in the thread. It is in beta on the Team and Enterprise plans and replaced the older Claude in Slack app.

Claude Tag is Anthropic's Slack product: anyone in a channel tags @Claude, and Claude does the work with the tools an Owner connected, then replies in the thread. Anthropic introduced it on Jun 23, 2026 for the Team and Enterprise plans, and the Claude Help Center still calls it a beta on those two plans (What is Claude Tag?, read Nov 6, 2026). It replaced the earlier Claude in Slack app, which switched over to Claude Tag on Aug 3, 2026. Slack is the only home for now; a Microsoft Teams version is listed as coming soon with a waitlist (Claude Tag, read Nov 6, 2026). It is one of several ways to use Claude outside the main app, alongside Claude in Chrome and Claude for Microsoft 365.

What Claude Tag does

Tagged in a thread, Claude reads the conversation for context, splits the request into steps, works through them with its tools and posts what it made back in the thread (Introducing Claude Tag, Jun 23, 2026). Anthropic's examples include summarizing a long thread into decisions and open questions, pulling metrics into the channel, turning a bug report into a draft pull request and gathering CRM notes before a sales call (Claude Tag, read Nov 6, 2026).

A Slack thread in #checkout-incidents. Marcus Nguyen writes at 2:14 PM: @Claude checkout error rate jumped from 0.3% to 6% right after the 14:00 deploy, can you dig in and figure out what broke? Claude, marked AGENT, answers that it is tracing the spike, with checked steps: pulled the deploy diff from GitHub (#4821), queried Datadog with 502s isolated to cart-service, correlated a 5x spike in DB connection-pool timeouts, compared error rates by region, and is writing a root-cause summary and rollback recommendation. A link reads Open session in Claude.

Each channel has one shared Claude, so anyone in the channel can see its work, steer it or pick up where a colleague left off (What is Claude Tag?, read Nov 6, 2026). This is the main difference from a private chat in the Claude app: the work belongs to the channel, not to one person.

Anthropic says Claude Tag opens 65% of its product pull requests, as Lydia of the Claude Code team put it in the launch video (Jun 23, 2026; see also Introducing Claude Tag). That is Anthropic's claim about itself, not an independent measurement. Customer figures on the product page, such as Carvana's 56% fewer alerts, are likewise reported by the customers.

Standing instructions and long tasks

Claude Tag can work without being mentioned. Given standing instructions, it watches a channel, posts a weekly digest, flags urgent items or pages people, and it can work on one task for days, following up and asking for input along the way (Claude Tag, read Nov 6, 2026). With "ambient" behavior turned on it also follows up on stalled threads (Introducing Claude Tag, Jun 23, 2026). To see what it is set to do in a channel, ask it: "@Claude what triggers do you have set up here?", and turn off what you do not want (What is Claude Tag?, read Nov 6, 2026).

Memory per channel

Claude keeps context per channel and per workspace, so it can refer on Thursday to Monday's standup (Claude Tag, read Nov 6, 2026). Owners can view, edit and delete that memory (What is Claude Tag?, read Nov 6, 2026). Separate configurations act as separate Claude identities whose memories do not mix: Anthropic's example is a sales setup that shares nothing with an engineering setup (Introducing Claude Tag, Jun 23, 2026). Claude Tag memory is separate from your personal Memory in the Claude app.

Connectors and Agent Identity

In channels, Claude acts under its own identity, which Anthropic calls Agent Identity, rather than borrowing a person's login. Every use of a credential is logged, so an Owner can trace what Claude did and who asked (Claude Tag, read Nov 6, 2026). The product page lists GitHub, Asana, Linear, Atlassian, HubSpot, Google Drive, Snowflake, Datadog, PagerDuty, Figma, Gong, Zendesk, Salesforce and BigQuery among its tools; see Connectors for how connectors work in general.

Access is set at three levels, each inheriting from the one above: organization-wide, per Slack workspace (all public channels), and per private channel, which can add credentials the rest of the workspace does not get, such as a legal channel kept apart from engineering (What is Claude Tag?, read Nov 6, 2026). Traces land in the destination tool too: commits and pull requests show the Claude GitHub App as author with a link back to the Slack thread.

Channels versus direct messages

Claude Tag works in three places in Slack: tagged in a channel, in a direct message, and in Slack's AI assistant panel (What is Claude Tag?, read Nov 6, 2026). The difference matters for billing and access:

  1. In a channel, Claude uses the organization's identity and the tools set up for that channel, and the work is billed to the organization.
  2. In a direct message or the assistant panel, Claude uses your own Claude account's tools, such as web search and your connectors, and the usage counts against your own account.

How to set up Claude Tag

Anthropic gives four steps (Introducing Claude Tag, Jun 23, 2026):

  1. Pair Claude Tag with your Slack workspace (the "Add to Slack" button on claude.com/product/tag).
  2. Give Claude access to your tools and repositories.
  3. Set a monthly spend limit for the organization.
  4. Test Claude in a private channel before opening it up.

Only a Primary Owner or Owner can do this; an Admin cannot. Once a channel is ready, members need no setup of their own. Organization settings > Claude Tag > Member Access chooses who may use it: anyone in the Slack workspace, any member of the Claude organization, or (Enterprise only) members whose custom role has the "Claude Tag in Slack" capability (What is Claude Tag?, read Nov 6, 2026).

Channels with Slack guests are blocked by default. The setting "Allow Claude to respond to guests" can instead allow channel-only access while a guest is present, or full access.

Pricing and spend limits

Claude Tag has no published per-seat price. It is consumption-based: spend depends on how much Claude works, not on headcount (What is Claude Tag?, read Nov 6, 2026). An organization-wide limit caps the total, per-channel limits sit under it, and admins are alerted at 75% and 95% of a limit. Work that would go over a limit is declined rather than cut off halfway, and the person blocked can ask an admin for more from Slack. Anthropic offered an introductory launch credit to eligible organizations at launch without giving an amount (Introducing Claude Tag, Jun 23, 2026). Plan prices themselves are on Claude Team and Enterprise.

Privacy and data

Slack conversations stay separate from your Claude chat history, and neither app shows the other's conversations. If the integration is disconnected or the app uninstalled, Claude deletes those conversations within 30 days; in Slack they follow your organization's own retention rules. Wider policy is on Claude Privacy and Data Use.

Claude Code in Slack

Coding requests in Slack go through the same @Claude. On Team and Enterprise that means Claude Tag; the earlier Claude Code in Slack integration now answers only Pro, Max and Ultra accounts in workspaces not connected to Claude Tag, starting a cloud session of Claude Code for the task (Claude Code in Slack, read Nov 6, 2026). In Claude Code, the /install-slack-app command installs the Slack app. Anthropic also opened a Claude Tag API in beta for Enterprise on Oct 23, 2026.

A Slack window on #eng-tickets. Nathan Wilson reports at 9:02 AM that auth is throwing 502s on token refresh since the deploy, likely a race condition in services/auth. Elena Barna writes @Claude fix the bug in this thread and open a draft PR. At 9:06 AM Claude, marked AGENT, explains a race in services/auth/token_cache.go exposed by deploy a3f9c1e dropping a per-request mutex, and posts Draft PR #48217, CI green, +71 -12, with a link to Open session in Claude.

Frequently asked questions

Is Claude Tag the same as Claude for Slack? Claude Tag is the successor: the older Claude in Slack app switched over to Claude Tag on Aug 3, 2026, adding multi-day memory, scheduled follow-ups, proactive check-ins and its own identity.

Is Claude Tag free? No. Claude Tag is only on the Claude Team and Enterprise plans, and channel work is billed by consumption to the organization, under spend limits an Owner sets.

Can I use Claude Tag with a Pro or Max plan? Not as of Nov 6, 2026: Claude Tag needs Team or Enterprise. Pro, Max and Ultra users can still reach Claude Code from Slack in workspaces that are not connected to Claude Tag.

Does Claude Tag work in Microsoft Teams? Not yet. Anthropic lists a Microsoft Teams version of Claude Tag as coming soon, with a waitlist on claude.com.

Can Claude Tag read private channels? Claude Tag only works in channels it was added to, and Anthropic says Claude does not report from private channels to others; a private channel can be given extra tools that public channels do not get.

Who pays when I message Claude Tag directly? A direct message or the assistant panel uses your own Claude account and counts against it; work tagged in a channel is billed to the organization.
