Claude Web App

The Claude web app at claude.ai is where you sign in and chat with Claude in a browser, on every plan including Free; it holds your chats, projects, artifacts and settings, which sync with the desktop and mobile apps.

The Claude web app is at claude.ai: sign in with an email address or a Google account and start typing, on any plan including Free (How do I sign up for the Pro plan?). It first opened to the public in the US and UK as a beta with Claude 2 on Jul 11, 2023. Your conversations, projects, memory and preferences sync across the web, desktop and mobile apps. The web app does nearly everything the desktop app does except reach files and apps on your own computer.

Signing up and logging in

  1. Open claude.ai and choose to continue with Google or with an email address.
  2. New accounts verify a mobile number by SMS. VoIP numbers, Google Voice and landlines are refused, a number can serve at most three accounts, and it cannot be changed later (Verify your phone number).
  3. You must be at least 18 and in one of the roughly 176 supported locations.
  4. Pick a plan, or stay on Free.

Anthropic's Help Center asks users who are locked out of an account to contact Support from another email and copy in the account's address (Requesting a refund).

The chat screen

The main screen is a message box. Its "+" menu holds the extras: attach files, turn on web search or Research, add connectors, and turn off memory for a chat (Use research on Claude; Memory and chat search). The ghost icon at the top right of a new chat starts an incognito chat, marked by a black border (Use incognito chats). Claude's longer outputs open as Artifacts beside the conversation and are saved in an Artifacts tab (Artifacts).

Since Sep 16, 2026 chat and Cowork are being merged on Pro, Max and Ultra, so the same box takes a quick question or a larger task without choosing a mode (Claude Cowork and chat are one Claude). Tasks run in the cloud and can continue "after you close your laptop". Accounts not yet moved see Chat and Cowork side by side.

The sidebar

The sidebar lists recent chats and tasks and links to Projects and Artifacts. To rename or delete a chat, hover over it and open the "⋮" menu; to delete several, use "Select" or "Select all" in "Chats and tasks" (Delete or rename a conversation). A deleted chat leaves your history at once and Anthropic's systems within 30 days.

Choosing a model

The model menu offers the models your plan includes: Sonnet and Haiku on Free, plus Opus on Pro and up, and Fable on Max, Ultra and Team Premium seats (on Pro and Team Standard, paid with usage credits) (Plans & pricing). Recent models think before answering, and the effort level can be lowered to save usage (How do usage and length limits work?). Anthropic sets Claude Sonnet 5.5 to Medium effort by default in the apps (Introducing Claude Sonnet 5.5). See Claude Models and Extended and Adaptive Thinking.

Uploading files

Drag files into the message box or use "+". A chat takes up to 20 files of up to 500 MB each, images up to 8000 x 8000 pixels, and PDFs up to 1,000 pages; Claude reads the text and visuals of PDFs up to 100 pages and only the text beyond that (Upload files to Claude). Supported types include PDF, DOCX, CSV, TXT, HTML, EPUB, JSON and XLSX, and JPEG, PNG, GIF and WebP images. See Image and PDF Uploads.

Settings worth knowing

Exporting data works only on the web or desktop, not in the mobile apps; the emailed link expires 24 hours after delivery (Export your Claude data). See How to Export or Delete Claude Data.

Web app or desktop app?

The web app needs no install and works in any modern browser. The desktop app adds quick entry from anywhere, desktop extensions to local tools, Cowork on your own files and folders, and computer use (Download Claude). Both share one account. Claude Code also runs in the browser at claude.ai/code; see Claude Code on the Web.

Frequently asked questions

How do I log in to Claude? Go to claude.ai and continue with Google or your email address; new Claude accounts also verify a mobile number by SMS.

Is claude.ai free? Yes. The Claude web app at claude.ai works on the Free plan, with limited usage every five hours and every week; paid plans add more usage and features.

Do I need to download anything to use Claude? No. Claude runs in any modern browser at claude.ai; the desktop and mobile apps are optional and sync with the same account.

Why is Claude not available in my country? Claude works only in Anthropic's supported locations, listed on the Claude Help Center, and paid plans need a phone number from a supported location.
