Claude for Education

Claude for Education is Anthropic's university-wide plan for students, faculty and staff, priced on request, with a learning mode that guides students with questions instead of answers; US K-12 teachers can get Claude free for a year.

Claude for Education is a "comprehensive university-wide plan for institutions, including its students, faculty, and staff", sold through Anthropic's Education team with no public price, as of Nov 6, 2026. Its signature feature is learning mode, which Anthropic says "works like a good tutor: it asks questions that help you find the answers yourself". Anthropic launched it on Apr 2, 2025. There is no discounted plan for individual students: a student gets Claude for Education only through a university that buys it. Separately, verified US K-12 teachers can get a full year of Claude free if they sign up by June 30, 2027.

What is learning mode?

Learning mode changes how Claude answers a student. Instead of handing over a solution, it asks questions such as "How would you approach this problem?", works through core concepts, and offers templates for research papers and study guides, an approach Anthropic described at launch as Socratic questioning (Introducing Claude for Education). At launch it lived inside Projects, so a course project could guide students through its material. The current education page mentions it in one line and gives no setup details (Claude for higher education). Whether learning mode is also offered on individual Free and Pro accounts could not be confirmed from Anthropic's pages read on Nov 6, 2026.

The university plan

The pricing page's Education card lists student and faculty access at "discounted rates", academic research and learning mode with "dedicated API credits and educational features", and training and enablement (Plans & pricing). The education page lists the products universities can add: Claude Code, the Claude Developer Platform, Cowork, Claude for Word for academic writing, Claude Science, and the Team plan for research labs (Claude for higher education). A Canvas by Instructure LTI integration is documented in the help center (Claude for Education collection).

The first institutions were Northeastern University, Anthropic's first university design partner, with access for 50,000 students, faculty and staff across 13 campuses; the London School of Economics; and Champlain College (Introducing Claude for Education). The education page now also shows the University of San Francisco, Northumbria University, Syracuse, Dartmouth, the University of Virginia and the University of Pittsburgh among its customers (Claude for higher education).

Data and privacy for students

Claude for Education runs under Anthropic's Commercial Terms, not the Consumer Terms whose Aug 28, 2025 update asked consumer users to choose whether their chats may be used to train Claude (Updates to Consumer Terms and Privacy Policy). The education page says, "We only use data to improve our models when you give permission." Accounts are managed by the university's Primary Owner; the owner's data exports, the audit log and thumbs feedback are off by default, and where Anthropic acts as the university's data processor the Consumer Terms and Privacy Policy do not apply (Who owns and manages the data of my Claude for Education account?). See Claude Privacy and Data Use.

Claude for Teachers (K-12)

Claude for Teachers is "free for verified US K-12 educators"; those who sign up by June 30, 2027 get a full year of free access with Pro-level features, including Claude Code and Cowork. Teachers also get the Learning Commons connector with standards for all 50 states, teaching skills, connectors from MagicSchool, TeachFX and Canva for Education, and FERPA-aligned protections. Anthropic says it will not train on teachers' inputs or outputs. It is for teachers only: "Claude for Teachers is not for students". A teacher's account becomes a free Team-style plan without billing, SSO or usage credits, with usage higher than a standard free account. Schools and districts can get a free Claude Enterprise organization with SSO, admin controls and K-12 terms (Claude for K-12 teachers), with "extra usage limits" applying.

Students, researchers and other programs

At launch Anthropic announced Claude Campus Ambassadors, for students running educational projects on their campuses, and API credits for student builders (Introducing Claude for Education); the current education page does not list either, so their status is unclear. It does point students to Anthropic Academy's free "AI Fluency for students" course (Claude for higher education). Research groups at academic and nonprofit institutions can get a Team plan for scientists for 1 to 25 seats, with Standard seats at $0 and Premium seats at $15 a month for 12 months, regularly $20 and $100.

How it compares

OpenAI and Google court the same users. OpenAI sells ChatGPT Edu to universities as "an affordable plan", also without a public price, and offers ChatGPT for Teachers free to verified US K-12 educators through June 2027, a close match for Claude for Teachers. Google gives eligible US college students a year of Google AI Pro free if redeemed by Dec 31, 2026, something an individual student cannot get from Anthropic. For a student whose university has no Claude deal, the options are the Free plan or Claude Pro at full price.
