Claude Max

Claude Max costs $100 a month and gives "5x Pro usage every 5 hours and every week", as of Nov 6, 2026, plus Fable included up to half the weekly limit, $100 a month in API credits and priority access at busy times. Anthropic's tagline is "For all-day work". Max used to come in two sizes, 5x at $100 and 20x at $200; since about Oct 30, 2026 the $200 tier is a separate plan, Claude Ultra, so "Max" now means the $100 plan only (What is the Ultra plan?; Anthropic editor's note).

What Max adds over Pro

Max includes everything in Claude Pro plus five times its usage, early access to advanced features, priority access, Fable inside the plan, and monthly API credits (Plans & pricing). The help center adds longer multi-step background tasks in Cowork and "priority access to new models, features, products" (What is the Max plan?). Several features reached Max first in their rollout, among them Claude in Chrome, Cowork on the desktop and Cowork on the web (Release notes).

Max limits: five-hour, weekly and Fable

Max has three limits: a five-hour session limit, a weekly limit across all models, and a separate weekly limit for Fable (What is the Max plan?). Fable can use up to 50% of the weekly limit at no extra cost, but that half is not extra room: Fable draws down the same weekly total, and faster than other models. Anthropic publishes multiples, not message counts, so "5x" means five times whatever Pro allows. When a Max limit is reached, Claude Code may finish its current step each time within the weekly limit (on Pro, only once a week) (Use Claude Code with your Pro, Max, or Ultra plan). After that you can wait, turn on usage credits at API rates, or upgrade to Ultra. See Claude Usage Limits.

The $100 in API credits

Max includes $100 a month in credits for the Claude Platform, added on Oct 7, 2026. They are for building with the Claude API: the Messages and Batches APIs, the Console playground, Managed Agents and the Claude Agent SDK run with an API key. They do not pay for interactive Claude Code, for usage credits in the apps, or for Claude on Bedrock, Vertex AI or Foundry. They expire at the end of each billing cycle with no rollover, and they are claimed in Settings > Billing by linking one Console organization (Monthly API credits).

Max 5x vs Max 20x

6:32 At launch on Apr 9, 2025 Max had two tiers, "5x the usage rate limits of Claude Pro" at $100 and 20x at $200. The 20x tier is now Claude Ultra: "The Max 20x plan is now called the Ultra plan", and existing subscribers moved over with no price change. Ultra's terms differ from the old 20x wording: it has no five-hour limit for verified accounts and is described as 10x Pro usage every week, with $200 in API credits. Older articles and reviews that say "Max" may mean either tier; Anthropic's own posts before Oct 30, 2026 use "Max" for both.

Who needs Max

Max suits people who use Claude through most of a working day: developers running Claude Code for hours, analysts running long Cowork tasks or Research several times a day, and anyone who wants Fable without paying per message. If you hit Pro's limit once or twice a week, usage credits on Pro can cost less than the $80 step up. If even Max's five-hour window keeps stopping you, Claude Ultra removes it. Signing up and switching

New users can pick Max during sign-up; existing users choose "Upgrade to Max" in Settings > Billing (How do I sign up for the Max plan?). A Pro-to-Max upgrade restarts the billing cycle, charges a full month of Max less the unused Pro value, and starts your usage fresh on Max limits at once. An annual Pro balance larger than the Max price becomes account credit (What is the Max plan?). Upgrading from Max to Ultra is prorated for the rest of the cycle. The $100 price is for web subscriptions; the help center says mobile pricing "may vary depending on your app platform".

6:57 In a Mar 29, 2026 video, a video made before Ultra arrived, about Oct 30, 2026, when Max came at $100 and $200, Kian of The AI Productivity Coach estimated about 225 messages per five-hour window on the $100 tier and about 900 on the $200 one, depending on the prompts, and called Max "a pure usage play": worth it only if Pro's limits keep stopping you. His figures are estimates; Anthropic publishes multiples only.

19:45 Paul J Lipsky said in a Jun 7, 2026 video that the $20 plans "wouldn't cut it" for how much he uses AI, and that Max was necessary for his Cowork use.
