Claude Pro vs Max

Claude Pro ($20 a month) suits daily chat and light Claude Code use; Claude Max ($100) gives five times the usage, Fable in the plan and $100 in API credits; Claude Ultra ($200) removes the five-hour limit for verified accounts.

Claude Pro costs $20 a month, Claude Max $100 and Claude Ultra $200, as of Nov 6, 2026, and the main thing the extra money buys is usage: Max gives five times Pro's allowance every five hours and every week, and Ultra gives ten times Pro's weekly allowance with no five-hour limit for verified accounts. Max and Ultra also include the Fable models within the plan, priority access at busy times, and monthly API credits. For most people who chat, write and study, Pro is enough; for people who run Claude Code or long Cowork tasks most of the day, Max is usually the floor.

Usage: the real difference

All three plans have the same apps and almost the same features; the difference is how long you can work. Anthropic gives the plans as multiples of Pro and publishes no message or token counts behind them (Plans & pricing). Max is five times Pro in both the five-hour window and the week. Ultra is ten times Pro across the week and, for accounts Anthropic has verified, has no five-hour window at all. Each plan's usage resets five hours after the first message of a session, and weekly at a fixed time assigned to your account (How do usage and length limits work?).

The last published hour estimates are old but give a sense of scale. When weekly limits arrived on Aug 28, 2025, Anthropic's guidance as reported by TechCrunch was 40 to 80 hours of Sonnet 4 a week in Claude Code on Pro, against 140 to 280 hours on the $100 Max and 240 to 480 on the $200 tier (TechCrunch, Jul 28, 2025). Those figures were for 2025 models and plans and have not been restated for the current lineup.

Verdict on usage: Max and Ultra win plainly; the open question is only whether you need the headroom.

Models and Fable

All three include Claude Opus, Sonnet and Haiku, so Claude Opus 5.5 is available on Pro. The difference is Fable. On Pro, every Fable message is paid with usage credits at API rates from the first one; on Max and Ultra, Fable can use up to half of the weekly limit at no extra cost, though it uses the limit faster than other models. At the API price of $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens for Fable 5.1, regular Fable use on Pro becomes expensive quickly.

Verdict on models: equal for Opus, Sonnet and Haiku; Max or Ultra if you want Fable often.

Claude Code

Claude Code is on all three plans and shares the plan's limits with chat (Plans & pricing). Coding agents read and write many files and use far more tokens than chat, which is why the weekly limits were introduced for subscribers running Claude Code "continuously in the background, 24/7" in 2025. When the five-hour limit hits mid-answer, Claude Code can finish its current step: on Pro once per weekly period, on Max each time within the weekly limit (Use Claude Code with your Pro, Max, or Ultra plan). Anthropic doubled Claude Code's five-hour limits on paid plans on May 6, 2026, but the weekly limit still decides how far a heavy week goes.

Verdict on coding: Pro for occasional sessions or learning; Max for a working developer; Ultra when parallel agents or day-long sessions keep hitting the five-hour window. See Claude Code Pricing.

API credits

Max includes $100 and Ultra $200 a month in Claude Platform credits; Pro includes none. They pay for the Claude API, Managed Agents and the Claude Agent SDK with an API key, not interactive Claude Code, and they expire each month. For a developer who would pay for API use anyway, the credits offset much of Max's price difference over Pro. For someone who never calls the API, they are worth nothing.

Verdict on API credits: Max and Ultra, but only if you build on the API.

Price and value

Max costs five times Pro for five times the usage, so the price per unit of usage is the same; the extras (Fable in the plan, priority, API credits) are what tip it. Ultra costs twice Max for twice Max's weekly usage, plus the removal of the five-hour window. Pro alone has annual billing at $17 a month. A middle path exists: Pro users can buy usage credits at API rates when they hit a limit, and prepaid bundles save up to 30%. If you would hit Pro's limits only a few times a month, credits on Pro can cost less than Max.

Verdict on price: Pro for value at light use; Max is the same rate per unit with useful extras; Ultra only for a specific need.

Limits that are the same on every plan

Some things do not change with the plan. The context window is listed as up to 1M tokens, varying by model, on every plan. Training on your chats is opt-out on all three. Anthropic can adjust limits on any of them "at our discretion". None of them generates images or video (Can Claude produce images?).

When to choose Pro

  • You use Claude daily for writing, questions, documents or study, and rarely see a limit message.
  • You want to try Claude Code a few times a week, or use it on small projects.
  • You want the lowest price: annual Pro is $17 a month.
  • You hit a limit only occasionally and would rather pay usage credits than $80 more a month.

When to choose Max

  • You hit Pro's five-hour or weekly limit most weeks.
  • You code with Claude Code for hours a day, or run long Research and Cowork tasks.
  • You want Fable regularly without paying per message.
  • You build on the API and can use $100 a month of credits.

When to choose Ultra

  • Max's five-hour window keeps stopping you even though the week is not used up.
  • You run many agents in parallel or tasks that last most of a day.
  • You want $200 a month in API credits. Details are on Claude Ultra.

When to choose something else

If your work needs image or video generation, Claude has none, and ChatGPT Plus ($20) or Google AI Pro ($19.99) includes it at the same price as Pro. If you buy for a team of two or more, Team seats add admin controls and no training by default. For a fuller list see When to Use Something Else.

What reviewers found

In a May 3, 2025 video comparing the $20 Pro plan with the $100 Max plan, made before weekly limits and Ultra, Greg, on his YouTube channel Greg, judged Max built for developers and power users who can work in uninterrupted five-hour blocks, and Pro the better fit for someone who chats on and off through the day. Some of what he weighed then, such as Research and Claude Code being Max-only, has since changed: both are on Pro now.

Kian of The AI Productivity Coach gave a simple rule in a Mar 29, 2026 video, a video made before Ultra arrived, about Oct 30, 2026, when Max came at $100 and $200: move to the $100 Max if you regularly hit Pro's limits mid-session, and to the $200 tier only if you still hit them there.

Frequently asked questions

Is Claude Max worth it over Pro? Claude Max is worth it if you hit Claude Pro's limits most weeks, use Claude Code for hours a day, or want Fable without paying per message; otherwise Pro at $20 is the better value.

How much more usage does Claude Max give than Pro? Claude Max gives five times Pro's usage every five hours and every week. Claude Ultra gives ten times Pro's weekly usage with no five-hour limit for verified accounts.

Is Claude Max 20x still available? Not under that name. Claude Max 20x became Claude Ultra at the same $200 a month, and existing subscribers moved automatically.

Can I switch from Claude Pro to Max anytime? Yes. Upgrading from Claude Pro to Max takes effect at once, restarts the billing cycle, credits unused Pro time, and starts your usage fresh on Max limits.

Do Claude Pro and Max have the same models? Claude Pro and Max both include Opus, Sonnet and Haiku. Fable is included in Max up to half the weekly limit, while Pro pays for Fable with usage credits.

Does Claude Max have a five-hour limit? Yes. Claude Max has a five-hour limit at five times Pro's; only verified Claude Ultra accounts have no five-hour limit.
