Claude in Chrome

Claude in Chrome is Anthropic's extension for Google Chrome that lets Claude read web pages and click, type and fill forms on sites you are signed in to. It is on every paid Claude plan and has been generally available since Aug 26, 2026.

Claude in Chrome is a Google Chrome extension that lets Claude see the page you have open, then click, type, navigate and fill forms on it using your existing logins; it is on every paid plan (Pro, Max, Ultra, Team and Enterprise) and became generally available on Aug 26, 2026 (as of Nov 6, 2026). It is not on the Claude Free Plan. The extension runs in a side panel in Chrome, and the same browser can also be driven from the Claude Desktop App, from Cowork sessions and from Claude Code. Its main use is reaching web tools that have no connector or API: internal dashboards, vendor portals, admin consoles and older systems.

What can Claude in Chrome do?

Claude in Chrome works on the pages already open in your browser. It can read a page, follow links, type into fields and submit forms on sites where you are signed in, so it acts as you would, with your accounts (Claude in Chrome). Anthropic's own examples include pulling numbers from an analytics dashboard and summarizing them, tidying a Google Drive (new folders, moved files, flagged duplicates), preparing for the day from a calendar and inbox, logging sales calls into Salesforce after you approve, and listing promotional emails for review before deleting them in bulk.

A Stop Claude button sits at the foot of the page. In the Claude side panel, titled Seattle home search, the user asks for a 3-bedroom house in Seattle under $800K with a garage and at least 1500 sqft, top 5 options, and Claude shows Running command..., with Opus 5 High as the model.

Several features came in stages (Getting started with Claude in Chrome):

  • Multiple tabs: drag tabs into Claude's tab group and it works across all of them.
  • Background work: a task keeps running while you switch tabs, as long as Chrome stays open.
  • Scheduled tasks: saved shortcuts can run on a schedule from the clock icon in the panel.
  • Shortcuts: saved prompts that run when you type "/" in the panel.
  • Console logs: Claude can read page errors, network requests and the page structure, which is why developers pair it with Claude Code to test sites they are building.
  • Skills, plugins and connectors: the ones on your account work in the side panel too (Skills, Connectors).
  • 1Password sign-in (beta, macOS): you approve each request with biometrics, and Claude never sees the password or one-time code.
  • Recorded workflows: available only in the older "classic" side panel.

Sessions are saved to your Claude history and can be continued on the web, in the desktop app or on a phone.

The Claude side panel, titled Calendar review, holds the request to go through this week's meetings that need rooms, check room availability and book spaces by meeting size and location, and shows Running command..., with Opus 5 High as the model.

How do I install Claude in Chrome?

  1. Open Google Chrome and find Claude in the Chrome Web Store.
  2. Click "Add to Chrome".
  3. Sign in with your Claude account (a paid plan).
  4. Pin it: click the puzzle piece icon, then the pin next to "Claude".
  5. Grant the permissions Chrome asks for.

The help center lists 15 browser permissions and what each is for: "debugger" lets Claude click, type and take screenshots, "scripting" lets it read page text, "downloads" lets it save files (Getting started with Claude in Chrome).

To let the desktop app use it, go to Settings > Customize > Connectors, click "Configure" next to Claude in Chrome and switch it on. It starts off in each conversation, so turn it on from the connectors menu in the chat when you need it. Claude also has a built-in browser of its own in the desktop app, which needs no install and is the default for people new to browser use; you choose between the two in Settings > Capabilities > Preferred browser (Claude in Chrome). The Cowork settings name the same choice under Settings > Cowork > "Preferred browser".

Permissions and safety

Since general availability, Claude no longer asks before every step by default. It approves actions it judges safe itself, using the same mechanism as auto mode in Claude Code, and a separate safety classifier checks each action (visiting a site, typing text) against your original request and blocks any that do not match (Claude in Chrome is generally available). You can switch this off in the extension's settings and approve every action by hand, or approve one site at a time. Whatever the mode, Claude asks before purchases, financial actions and anything that cannot be undone (Claude in Chrome).

The main risk is prompt injection: text hidden in a web page that tries to give Claude instructions of its own. Anthropic's product page says its protections "aren't foolproof" and that Claude "may hallucinate", and the help center still calls browser use "still risky" (Getting started with Claude in Chrome). Anthropic advises against using it for banking, health records, password management or other sensitive personal data.

Anthropic has published its own test numbers, which have not been independently measured:

On Team and Enterprise plans, admins enable or disable the extension for the organization and restrict it to approved sites. On Enterprise, an owner must also enable Cowork in the cloud before the newer side panel appears.

How does it compare with other browser agents?

OpenAI took the opposite route: it retired its ChatGPT Atlas browser on Aug 9, 2026 and moved to a built-in browser in its desktop app plus an extension that, since Aug 31, 2026, also runs in Edge, Brave, Opera and Vivaldi, where Claude in Chrome runs only in Chrome. Google offers Gemini in Chrome "auto browse" with its AI Pro and Ultra plans, and Perplexity sells its own browser, Comet. Which agent handles a given site best has no independent, dated benchmark to settle it.
