Claude Usage Limits

Claude's paid plans have a session limit that resets five hours after your first message and a weekly limit that resets at a fixed time each week; Anthropic publishes multiples of Pro's allowance, not message counts.

Claude limits usage in two windows: a session limit that "resets in full five hours later" after your first message, and a weekly limit that resets at a fixed time each week assigned to your account. Anthropic does not publish message counts ("there's no fixed message count") but states each plan as a multiple of Pro: Pro at least 5x Free per session, Max 5x Pro, and Ultra 10x Pro a week with no five-hour limit for verified accounts, as of Nov 6, 2026. Chat, Claude Code and the desktop app all draw from the same allowance. When you hit a limit you can wait, upgrade, or on a paid plan keep going with usage credits at API rates.

How does the five-hour limit work?

The five-hour clock starts when you send the first message of a session, not at a fixed time of day, and at the end of the five hours the allowance resets in full (How do usage and length limits work?). Settings > Usage shows the share used and the time left under "Current session". If you send one message at 9:00, the window runs to 14:00 whether you use it or not. Verified Claude Ultra accounts have no session limit and see no "Current session" bar (What is the Ultra plan?).

How do the weekly limits work?

On top of the session limit, paid plans have weekly limits across all models, and Max and Ultra have a separate weekly limit for Fable. Weekly limits reset at a fixed time each week assigned to your account, regardless of when you subscribed or started using Claude (How do usage and length limits work?). Weekly limits began on Aug 28, 2025, aimed, as TechCrunch reported Anthropic's reasoning, at subscribers running Claude Code "continuously in the background, 24/7" and at account sharing; Anthropic estimated then that fewer than 5% of subscribers would be affected.

Limits by plan

Plan Every five hours Every week Fable
Free Limited Limited Not available
Pro 1x 1x Usage credits only
Max 5x 5x Up to 50% of the weekly limit
Ultra None (verified) 10x Up to 50% of the weekly limit
Team Standard 1.25x Pro per session Weekly limit Usage credits only
Team Premium 6.25x Pro per session Weekly limit Up to 50% of the weekly limit
Enterprise No per-seat limit, billed at API rates None Billed at API rates

The Fable half is part of the weekly total, not extra: "you can never use more than your weekly limit", and Fable uses it faster than other models. Free's weekly limit appears on the pricing card, while the Free help article mentions only the five-hour session (Get started with Claude).

What uses up a limit faster

Usage depends on how much Claude has to read and write, not on the number of messages. Anthropic lists conversation length and complexity, the features used, the model, and the effort level (How do usage and length limits work?); its best-practices article adds large attachments, Research, web search, Artifacts and multi-step tasks (Usage limit best practices). Higher effort uses more tokens, connectors are token-heavy, and Cowork tasks use limits faster than chat (Claude Cowork). Every message in a long chat resends the whole conversation, so a long thread costs more per message than a fresh one. Ways to stretch a limit are on How to Make Claude Usage Limits Last.

Length limits are different

A usage limit is about how much you use over time; a length limit is about how much fits in one conversation, the context window. On paid plans the newest models take up to 1M tokens, others 500K or 200K (How do usage and length limits work?). With code execution on, Claude summarizes earlier messages as a chat nears the limit, which keeps it going but uses more of your allowance. A very large first message can still be refused; then start a new conversation or move the material into a project.

What to do when you hit a limit

  1. Wait. The session resets five hours after it started; the weekly limit on its fixed day. Settings > Usage shows when.
  2. Use a limit reset if offered. Anthropic occasionally gives eligible plans a "Reset for free" button in Settings > Usage on the web or desktop, which restores the session or weekly limit at once; it is not available on mobile or in Claude Code (Limit resets).
  3. Turn on usage credits (Pro, Max, Ultra): Settings > Usage, "Usage credits", "Enable", then set a monthly limit and add funds. Work continues at standard API rates and the banner reads "Now using credits." (Manage usage credits). Prepaid bundles save up to 30%.
  4. Upgrade. A higher plan's limits apply right away (How do usage and length limits work?); see Claude Pro vs Max.

Mobile subscribers can turn on usage credits only on the web. Monthly API credits on Max, Ultra and Team cannot be spent on extra app usage (Monthly API credits).

Claude Code limits

Claude Code shares the plan's limits with chat (Plans & pricing). Check what is left with /status. If the five-hour limit hits mid-answer, Claude Code may finish the current step ("Usage limit reached · wrapping up"): on Pro once per weekly period, on Max each time within the weekly limit (Use Claude Code with your Pro, Max, or Ultra plan). An ANTHROPIC_API_KEY in your environment switches Claude Code to API billing with no plan limits, at API prices. On May 6, 2026 Anthropic doubled Claude Code's five-hour limits on Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise and ended a peak-hours reduction for Pro and Max, after saying rising demand had "strained" its infrastructure (Higher usage limits and a SpaceX compute deal).

Criticism and caveats

Because Anthropic gives only multiples, users cannot know in advance how many messages or coding hours a plan buys, and the same plan lasts very differently with different models and tasks. Anthropic also reserves the right to change limits, including "weekly and monthly caps", and says it does not guarantee uninterrupted service. ChatGPT's Free plan, by contrast, advertises unlimited text chats on its default model, with abuse guardrails. See Claude vs ChatGPT.

What reviewers found

In a May 3, 2025 video, before weekly limits and before Ultra, Greg, on his YouTube channel Greg, walked through how a session starts with the first message and pointed out the catch: a stray follow-up or a thank-you sent just after one window ends opens a whole new five-hour session. He found that frustrating for people who chat on and off through the day; his numbers came from the Max plan as it was then, at $100 and $200.

In an Aug 12, 2026 video comparing the $20 plans, Parker Prompts found that Claude ran out "the fastest of the three by a clear margin" in his month of use, and that at the limit it simply stops until the reset, where ChatGPT and Gemini drop to a weaker model. He also noted that Cowork shares the same allowance as chat. That is one person's month, recorded before Ultra existed.

In a Jun 8, 2026 video, The AI Advantage put it more bluntly: on the $20 plans, expect Claude to cut you off at somewhere around 30 to 50% of the use ChatGPT would allow, and ChatGPT's free plan to be more generous too. The channel offered that as a rough rule from its own use, not a measurement.

Frequently asked questions

Does Claude have a daily limit? No. Claude has no daily limit; it has a session limit that resets five hours after your first message and a weekly limit that resets at a fixed time each week.

How many messages can I send on Claude? Anthropic publishes no fixed message count for any Claude plan. Usage depends on chat length, files, tools, the model and the effort level, and plans are stated as multiples of Pro.

When does the Claude weekly limit reset? Claude's weekly limit resets at a fixed time each week assigned to your account, shown in Settings > Usage, not on the day you subscribed.

Does Claude Code share limits with the Claude app? Yes. Claude Code, claude.ai and Claude Desktop all count toward the same Claude plan usage limits.

Can I pay to keep using Claude after hitting the limit? Yes, on Claude Pro, Max and Ultra. Turn on usage credits in Settings > Usage to keep working at standard API rates; Free users must wait or upgrade.

Does Claude Ultra have no limits? Claude Ultra has no five-hour limit for verified accounts, but it still has a weekly limit across all models and a separate weekly Fable limit.
