How to Export or Delete Claude Data
Export Claude data in Settings > Privacy > Export data on the web or desktop (the link arrives by email and lasts 24 hours); delete a chat from its menu, and delete the account in Settings > Account. Deleted chats leave Anthropic's systems within 30 days.
To export your Claude chats, open Settings > Privacy on claude.ai or in Claude Desktop and click "Export data"; a download link arrives by email and expires 24 hours after delivery. To delete one chat, open its "⋮" menu and choose Delete; to delete everything, go to Settings > Account > "Delete account", which is permanent (Delete your Claude account). A deleted chat disappears from your history at once and from Anthropic's back-end systems within 30 days, with exceptions for chats used in training (if you allowed it), flagged for safety, or sent as feedback. This page covers the individual plans; Team and Enterprise members depend on their organization's settings.
Quick facts
| Export | Settings > Privacy > Export data, web or desktop only |
| Export link expires | 24 hours after delivery |
| Export plans | Free, Pro, Max and Ultra; Team and Enterprise if an owner allows |
| Delete a chat | Chat menu > Delete; bulk delete in "Chats and tasks" |
| Deleted from back end | Within 30 days |

Export your data
- Sign in at claude.ai or in Claude Desktop. Exports cannot be run from the iOS or Android app (Export your Claude data).
- Open Settings > Privacy.
- Click "Export data".
- Open the email Anthropic sends and download the file while still signed in, within 24 hours.
The export holds your conversations and account data; on Nov 6, 2026 it did not yet include a saved Personal Finance dashboard. It cannot be imported into another personal account, and chat history from other assistants cannot be imported into Claude either (Get started with Claude). What can move is memory: Claude can import memory from other AI assistants and export its own (experimental), through Settings or claude.com/import-memory (Memory and chat search).
Team and Enterprise: members can export their own chats only if an owner turns on "Allow members to export their own data", and that export leaves out the contents of uploaded files. Primary Owners export the whole organization from Organization settings > Data and privacy (Export your Claude data).
Delete a chat
- Web and desktop: hover over the chat in the sidebar, click "⋮", then "Delete". To delete several, open "Chats and tasks", click "Select" (or "Select all"), then delete.
- iPhone and iPad: touch and hold the chat, then tap "Delete".
- Android: open the chat and use "⋮", or the checklist icon to pick several.
(Delete or rename a conversation)
Two things a deleted chat does not take with it. Memory made from that chat stays until you delete it in Settings > Your Claude, under "Manage" next to "Your memory" (Memory and chat search). And Projects, with their files and project memory, stay until you delete the project itself.
Delete your memory
To clear what Claude remembers without deleting chats, go to Settings > Your Claude, turn off "Generate memory from chats" and choose "Reset memory", which deletes it permanently, project memories included; "Pause memory" keeps it but stops using it. Single topics can be edited or deleted under "Manage" (Memory and chat search).
Delete your account
- Export anything you want to keep first.
- If you pay for Pro, Max or Ultra, cancel and wait for the period to end (How to Cancel a Claude Subscription).
- Delete:
- Web: Settings > Account > "Delete account".
- iOS: Settings > Account > Profile > "Delete account".
- Android: menu > your initials > Profile > Account Actions > "Delete Account" > "I Understand".
Some accounts show a note to contact Support instead, and anyone with several accounts on one email must say which to delete (Delete your Claude account). Deletion is permanent and cannot be undone.
What Anthropic keeps, and for how long
On Free, Pro and Max (the privacy center articles had not yet added Ultra on Nov 6, 2026), Anthropic's retention rules are (How long do you store my data?):
| Data | Kept |
|---|---|
| A chat you delete | Removed from back-end systems within 30 days |
| Chats when "Help improve our AI models" is on | De-identified, up to 5 years, in training pipelines (new or resumed chats only) |
| Chats flagged under the Usage Policy | Inputs and outputs up to 2 years; safety classification scores up to 7 years |
| Feedback (thumbs up or down, bug reports) | 5 years, the whole conversation, de-linked from your user ID |
| Incognito chats | Not in history; kept 30 days, never used for training |
Turning off "Help improve our AI models" in Settings > Privacy stops future training on your old and new chats, but not training runs already started or models already trained (How do I change my model improvement privacy settings?). More in Claude Privacy and Data Use.
