How to Cancel a Claude Subscription

To cancel Claude Pro, Max or Ultra bought on the web, go to Settings > Billing and click Cancel; App Store and Google Play subscriptions are canceled in the app's Billing menu or the store. The plan runs to the end of the period, and payments are generally non-refundable.

To cancel a Claude Pro, Claude Max or Claude Ultra subscription bought on claude.ai or in Claude Desktop, open Settings > Billing and click "Cancel"; if you subscribed in the iPhone or Android app, cancel through the app's Billing menu or the App Store or Google Play (How do I cancel my paid Claude subscription?). Cancel at least 24 hours before the next billing date to avoid the next charge. The paid plan keeps working until the period ends, then the account drops to the Free plan with its chats intact. Anthropic says payments are non-refundable except where its terms or the law say otherwise, with a 14-day window in the EEA and UK.

Quick facts

Web or desktop Settings > Billing > Cancel
iPhone or iPad Your initials > Billing > Manage subscription, or Apple's subscription settings
Android The same path in the app, or Google Play's subscription settings
Deadline 24 hours before the next billing date
When it ends At the end of the paid period; then Free
Data "Canceling doesn't delete your data"
Refunds Non-refundable except by terms or law; EEA and UK within 14 days, prorated

Cancel on the web or desktop

  1. Sign in at claude.ai or open Claude Desktop (Mac, Windows or Linux).
  2. Click your initials or name, then Settings.
  3. Open Billing.
  4. Click "Cancel" and confirm.

This works only for subscriptions bought on the web or desktop. If Billing shows the plan is managed by Apple or Google, cancel there instead.

Cancel on iPhone or iPad

If you subscribed in the iOS app, tap your initials at the top right, then Billing, then "Manage subscription", or cancel it in your Apple account's subscription settings (How do I cancel my paid Claude subscription?). Deleting the app does not cancel anything (Install Claude for iOS).

Cancel on Android

If you subscribed through Google Play, use the same Billing path in the Claude app, or cancel it in Google Play's subscription settings (How do I cancel?). Uninstalling the app does not cancel the subscription (Install Claude for Android).

What happens after you cancel

  • The plan runs to the end of the period you paid for, then the account becomes Free. Chats, projects and files stay; Free limits and features apply from then on (Free allows up to five projects).
  • Monthly API credits on Max and Ultra stop arriving; credits already granted last until they expire at the end of their cycle, and they "can't be refunded" because they were not purchased (How do I cancel?).
  • Limit resets you had not used are lost on cancel or downgrade (Limit resets).
  • Personal Finance cannot be opened after the paid plan ends, and linked banks stay linked until you unlink them (How do I cancel?).
  • Claude Code stops working with the account, since Free does not include it (Plans & pricing).

To downgrade instead of quitting (Max to Pro, say), change the plan in Settings > Billing; downgrades take effect at the end of the period, and any excess value is kept as account credit (Plans & pricing).

Can I get a refund?

Anthropic's rule: "all payments are non-refundable" except where its Consumer Terms or the law require otherwise (Requesting a refund for a paid Claude plan). To ask anyway:

  1. Click your initials, then "Get help".
  2. Choose "Send us a message", accept, then "Claude Refund Request".
  3. Pick a reason and follow the eligibility check.

Special cases from the same article:

  • EEA and UK: a refund within 14 days of purchase, prorated by use, sometimes offered right in Settings.
  • App Store purchases: only Apple can refund, at reportaproblem.apple.com, and a refund does not cancel the subscription.
  • Google Play purchases: Anthropic Support checks active subscriptions; for an ended one, send the Google Play email or the GPA order number.
  • Moving to Team: upgrading from Pro, Max or Ultra to a Team plan cancels the personal plan with an automatic prorated refund about a day after the Team payment.
  • Bank disputes: no refund while a dispute is pending.

Team and Enterprise

A Team plan is canceled by an Owner or Primary Owner in Organization settings > Billing; access continues to the end of the cycle (Cancel your organization's Team plan subscription). A sales-assisted Enterprise contract is ended through its Anthropic contact (Plans & pricing).

Frequently asked questions

Does canceling Claude delete my chats? No. Canceling a Claude subscription keeps your conversations; the account moves to Free at the end of the period. To remove data, see How to Export or Delete Claude Data.

Can I cancel Claude Pro and keep using it? Yes, until the end of the period you already paid for; Claude Pro then becomes the Free plan.

Does Claude offer refunds? Rarely. Anthropic says Claude payments are non-refundable except where its terms or local law require, such as the 14-day prorated refund in the EEA and UK (Requesting a refund).

Why can't I find the Cancel button in Claude's settings? Your subscription was probably bought through the App Store or Google Play, which manage it; cancel Claude in the store's subscription settings.

Does deleting the Claude app cancel my subscription? No. Removing the Claude app from a phone does not cancel a paid plan; cancel it in Billing or the store.

Can I delete my Claude account while subscribed? Anthropic asks paid users to cancel first and wait for the period to end before deleting the account (Delete your Claude account).
