Claude cannot generate photos or illustrations as of Nov 6, 2026. It draws diagrams, charts, SVG graphics and interactive visuals as code instead, and reads images you upload; ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok and others generate images.

No: as of Nov 6, 2026, Claude does not generate photos or illustrations; the Claude Help Center says plainly that it "doesn't generate photos or illustrations the way image-generation tools do" (Can Claude produce images?, updated Mar 16, 2026). What Claude makes instead is visuals written as code: diagrams, charts, SVG drawings, interactive widgets, web pages, slides and animations that it builds and renders, and that you can edit by asking. It also reads images you upload (Image and PDF Uploads). Every major rival assistant (ChatGPT, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Grok, Meta AI, Perplexity) does generate images, so for a photo-like picture, another tool is the honest answer.

Why can't Claude make images?

Every Claude model takes text and images in and gives text out (Models overview); none of them outputs pixels. Anthropic has not released an image model, and neither its news page nor its release notes announced one as of Nov 6, 2026, so any date for Claude image generation would be a guess.

What Claude can make instead

Custom visuals in chat. Claude draws diagrams, charts and interactive visuals in HTML and SVG right in the conversation, which you can click, question and ask it to revise (beta on web and desktop) (Can Claude produce images?).
Artifacts. Standalone pieces Claude writes and shows beside the chat: HTML pages, React apps, SVG graphics, Mermaid flowcharts and Markdown documents, with an address to share. Artifacts can be exported to PowerPoint, Google Slides, PDF, MP4 and HTML (Artifacts).
Claude Design. Designs, prototypes and one-pagers built as code by chatting, on every plan.
Claude Slides and Docs. Decks and documents, with layouts, shapes and charts.
Claude Motion (beta, Team and Enterprise): animations and explainers coded by Claude from text, charts and shapes, then downloaded as MP4 (Claude Dashboards and Motion).
Charts from data. With code execution on, Claude writes Python that turns a spreadsheet into PNG charts you can download (File Creation).

These work well for logos as vector shapes, icons, flowcharts, org charts, data charts, simple illustrations, page layouts and infographics. They do not produce photographs, painted art or realistic scenes: an SVG of a mountain looks drawn with shapes, not photographed.

Ways to get images with Claude's help

Write the prompt, use another generator. Claude can write a detailed prompt for an image tool, then critique the result once you upload it back.
Connect a tool. Third-party products in Claude's directory can do the generating. Runway, which "generates and edits video, images, and audio", joined the Claude Marketplace on Nov 4, 2026, and Canva is one of the interactive Connectors that work inside the chat (Interactive connectors). The images then come from that product, under its terms, not from Claude.
Call an image API from code. In Claude Code or with the Claude API, Claude can write and run a program that calls an image model from another company.
Search for one. Web Search can return existing images from Bing, each linked to the page it came from.

Which assistants do generate images?

As of Nov 6, 2026: ChatGPT (ChatGPT Images 2.6, released Nov 4, 2026), Google Gemini (the Nano Banana models), Microsoft Copilot, Grok (Grok Imagine), Meta AI and Perplexity all generate images in their apps. On Arena's text-to-image leaderboard, updated Nov 2, 2026 from about 7 million votes, OpenAI's models held the top five places, followed by Microsoft's MAI-Image-2.6, Google's Gemini Nano Banana 2.1 and xAI's Grok Imagine Image 2.0; Anthropic has no entry because Claude has no image model.
