File Creation

Claude can create and edit Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint decks, Word documents and PDFs that you download or save to Google Drive, on every Claude plan including Free. It writes and runs code in a private sandbox to build them.

Yes, Claude can make real Office files: ask for a spreadsheet, a deck, a document or a PDF and Claude builds an Excel (.xlsx), PowerPoint (.pptx), Word (.docx) or PDF file you can download or save to Google Drive, on every plan, including Free, in the web, desktop and mobile apps (as of Nov 6, 2026). Behind it, Claude writes and runs code in a private sandbox, the same capability that analyzes data and draws charts. File creation launched on Sep 9, 2025 and reached Pro and the mobile apps on Sep 29, 2025.

How do I make Claude create an Excel or PowerPoint file?

  1. Check that Settings > Capabilities > "Code execution and file creation" is on ("Create and edit files" in the updated layout). It is on by default for individual plans.
  2. Ask for the file plainly: "Make an Excel budget for a six-person team with monthly totals" or "Turn this report into a 10-slide PowerPoint".
  3. Attach anything it should use: a CSV, a PDF, an old deck to edit.
  4. Download the file from the chat, or ask Claude to save it to Google Drive (needs the Google Drive connector).

Claude can also edit a file you upload: fix formulas, restyle a deck, fill in a template (Create and edit files).

What Claude can make

  • Excel: spreadsheets with working formulas.
  • PowerPoint: decks, including branded ones built to a template.
  • Word: reports, letters and formatted documents.
  • PDF: new PDFs, or PDFs filled, merged or extracted.
  • Charts and analysis: Claude reads CSV and TSV files, runs Python, and returns PNG charts; it can even train simple machine learning models on your data.

(Create and edit files)

Anthropic's built-in Skills for Excel, Word, PowerPoint and PDF are the instructions Claude follows to build these files. For work that stays in Office, the add-ins in Claude for Microsoft 365 (and Claude for Excel) work inside the apps instead of producing a download. For decks and documents that live in Claude and can be edited and shared there, see Artifacts and Claude Slides and Docs.

The sandbox behind it

Each conversation's code runs in an isolated container that no other user shares, with limits on how long a task and a session can run; a classifier watching for prompt injection can stop a run (Create and edit files). Network access differs by plan:

  • Free, Pro, Max, Ultra: on, with network access, so Claude can install packages.
  • Team: on, with internet limited to package managers.
  • Enterprise: on for new organizations, with internet off.

Team and Enterprise owners choose Off, Package managers only, Package managers plus named domains, or All domains. The approved list includes pypi.org, registry.npmjs.org, github.com and api.anthropic.com. Developers get the same sandbox as the Code Execution Tool on the API.

Limits

  • Files inside the sandbox are capped at 30 MB each, uploads and downloads alike. The general upload article allows larger files in an ordinary chat (500 MB); the two Help Center articles disagree, and the 30 MB figure is the one that applies to files Claude works on in code (Image and PDF Uploads).
  • File creation uses more of your usage limit than plain chat.
  • On Free, Pro, Max and Ultra, a chat containing created files cannot be shared publicly by link.
  • Uploading an .xlsx file at all needs this setting on.
  • Incognito Chats in the new Claude experience open in the older chat, where Claude cannot create files or run code, and Personal Finance chats cannot create Office files either.
