Claude vs Gemini
Gemini is the better value and the better pick for images, video, voice and Google apps, and its Gemini 4 models lead Arena's text board; Claude leads on coding agents and in published writing tests. As of Nov 6, 2026 Google AI Pro costs $19.99 a month and Claude Pro $20.
As of Nov 6, 2026, Gemini is the better value and the clear choice for images, video, voice and anyone who works in Gmail and Google Docs, while Claude is the stronger tool for coding and is preferred in published writing tests. Google AI Pro costs $19.99 a month and adds 5 TB of storage and YouTube Premium Lite; Claude Pro costs $20. On model quality the two are close and the lead depends on the board: Gemini 4 Carbon and Argon lead Arena's text board, Claude Opus 5.5 leads coding boards. CNET's 2026 roundup names Claude best overall and Gemini best value, saying Google "unquestionably wins" on what its plans include (CNET).

Verdict by task
Writing
Claude wins in the published tests. In Tom's Guide's Aug 27, 2026 test of ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini editing the same draft, the tester would choose Claude for returning to an old draft (Tom's Guide). That is one tester's judgment, and no 2026 head-to-head of Gemini 4 against Claude was found, so tone remains a matter of taste.
Coding
Claude wins on the public boards. On Terminal-Bench 4.0 (Nov 6, 2026), Claude Code with Claude Opus 5.5 scores 64.85%; no Gemini 4 model has an entry, and Google's best is Gemini 3.8 Flash at 19.09%. On WebDev Arena, Opus 5.5 scores 1810, Gemini 4 Carbon 1768 (marked preliminary) and Gemini 4 Argon 1679. Google's own table tells a closer story: it gives Gemini 4 Carbon 65.2% on Terminal-Bench 4.0 against 59.6% for Opus 5.5, while Opus 5.5 leads FrontierSWE 2 at 62.3% against 61.2% (Gemini models). Carbon is limited to some cyber defenders as of its Oct 28, 2026 launch (Google). For terminal tools, see Claude Code vs Gemini CLI.
Reasoning and knowledge
Gemini leads by a nose on the broad boards. Arena's text board ranks Gemini 4 Carbon first at 1528, Gemini 4 Argon second at 1520 and Claude Opus 5.5 third at 1509, with overlapping ranges. The Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index gives Gemini 4 Carbon 60 and Opus 5.5 59, but Gemini 4 Argon, the model Pro subscribers get, 50. Claude leads ARC-AGI-2 against Argon, 93.3% to 91.3%, and Artificial Analysis's Humanity's Last Exam runs, 61.4% to 57.1%. On Google's own table, Gemini 4 Carbon leads most rows, including long-context GraphWalks at 96.2% against 66.8% for Opus 5.5 (Gemini models). More on Claude Benchmarks.
Research
Gemini wins on access. Deep Research is on Gemini's Free plan (Gemini subscriptions), and Gemini Notebook, formerly NotebookLM, turns sources into notes and Audio Overviews (Gemini Notebook). Claude's Research is for paid plans only, though Web Search with citations is on every Claude plan (Use research on Claude). No independent test compared the two research modes.
Images and video
Gemini wins outright. It makes and edits images with the Nano Banana models and video with Veo 3.1, which adds sound, and Gemini Omni edits video by conversation (Nano Banana; Veo; Gemini Omni). Claude generates neither; it draws diagrams, charts and interactive visuals in code (Can Claude produce images?; see Image Generation).
Voice
Gemini wins on availability: Gemini Live is on the Free plan (Gemini subscriptions). Claude's Voice Mode is a beta on every plan with a limited set of voices, and its use counts toward normal limits (Use voice mode). No independent test compared the two voices.
Price
Gemini wins. Google AI Plus at $4.99 a month is the cheapest paid tier among the big assistants, and Google AI Pro at $19.99 bundles 5 TB of storage, YouTube Premium Lite and Gemini in Gmail and Docs. Claude Pro is $20 a month, or $17 billed annually, with nothing bundled. At the top, Google AI Ultra costs $99.99 or $199.99 and Claude Max and Claude Ultra cost $100 and $200.
Usage limits and context
Mixed. Both now use a limit that refreshes every five hours under a weekly cap: Google states it for Gemini (Gemini Apps limits) and Anthropic for Claude's paid plans (Claude Usage Limits). Gemini's limits are relative (Pro is "4x higher" than standard), and Claude's are shown as a share used in Settings > Usage. On context, Claude's plans list up to 1M tokens on every individual plan, while Gemini gives 32K without a plan, 128K on AI Plus and 1M on Pro and Ultra (Gemini Apps limits).
Google apps
Gemini wins for Google users. AI Pro puts Gemini inside Gmail, Docs and Vids, and Gemini in Chrome can browse for you on Pro and Ultra (Gemini subscriptions). Claude reaches Google through Claude for Google Workspace, a beta add-on for Docs, Sheets and Slides (Claude for Google Workspace), and Gmail, Calendar and Drive Connectors.
Privacy
A near tie. Google uses chats to train its models while Keep Activity is on, a sample is read by human reviewers, reviewed chats are kept up to three years, and activity is auto-deleted after 18 months by default (Gemini Apps Privacy Hub). Claude trains on Free and paid individual chats unless you opt out in Settings > Privacy, and keeps opted-in data up to five years (Claude Privacy and Data Use; Claude pricing). Both have chats that are never used for training: Gemini's temporary chats and Claude's Incognito Chats.
When to choose Gemini
Choose Gemini if you want the most for your money, images or video, or an assistant inside Gmail and Google Docs. Its free plan includes image generation, Deep Research and Gemini Live, and AI Pro's 5 TB of storage can replace a separate Google One plan. It also suits people who want an agent in Chrome or Google's video tools.
When to choose Claude
Choose Claude if your work is code or long writing. Claude Code with Opus 5.5 leads Terminal-Bench 4.0, where no Gemini 4 model is listed, and Opus 5.5 leads WebDev Arena. Claude's free plan also reads far more at once than Gemini's 32K. For other options, see Claude Alternatives.
What reviewers found
In an Aug 12, 2026 video, Parker Prompts paid for ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro and Google AI Pro for a month and ran the same tasks on GPT-5.5, Gemini 3.1 Pro and Claude Opus 4.8, all older than today's models. The reviewer found Claude's writing the most natural and human, but gave the best place to work on a document to Gemini's Canvas, which edits like a word processor. Gemini also took video, the extras bundled with AI Pro and, in the reviewer's experience, the most use before limits, while Claude ran out fastest; Claude took raw intelligence "but only just", connectors, Cowork and coding, though the reviewer named Gemini the best of the three at front-end design.
In a Jun 7, 2026 video that did not name model versions, Paul J Lipsky said he does not love Claude for everyday chat: he felt it grasps real-world knowledge less well than ChatGPT and Gemini, disliked its "wall of text", and preferred Gemini's structured answers. He still called Claude the strongest writing model, with Gemini's Canvas the better tool to write in, and found Gemini's connected apps mostly limited to Google's own.
On limits, he found Claude ran out fastest by far, then Gemini, with ChatGPT hit least; but ChatGPT and Gemini drop to a weaker model instead of stopping, and Google's Flow, Flow Music and NotebookLM do not count against Gemini's limit. He said he pays for Claude Max for Cowork and for Google AI Ultra for images and video, because no $20 plan covered his use.
