Claude vs Microsoft Copilot

Microsoft Copilot is free and built into Word, Excel, Outlook and Windows, and Microsoft 365 Copilot at work already offers Claude models in most commercial tenants; Claude's own apps go further on coding and long documents. As of Nov 6, 2026, Microsoft 365 Personal with Copilot costs $9.99 a month and Claude Pro $20.

As of Nov 6, 2026, Microsoft Copilot is the better choice if you live in Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams, and it costs less with Office included, while Claude is the better choice for coding, long documents and a dedicated assistant. The comparison is unusual: at work, Microsoft 365 Copilot itself can run Claude. Microsoft turns Claude models on by default "for most customers in commercial cloud", outside the EU, EFTA and UK (Microsoft Learn). So the real choice is between Microsoft's Copilot experience and Anthropic's own apps, not between Claude and a model that never uses Claude.

Claude inside Copilot

Microsoft added Anthropic's models to Microsoft 365 Copilot on Sep 24, 2025, first Claude Sonnet 4 and Claude Opus 4.1 in Researcher and Copilot Studio (Microsoft 365 blog). Today Anthropic is a Microsoft subprocessor, and Claude models are on by default for most commercial tenants in Copilot, Researcher, Copilot Studio, Power Platform and Copilot in the Microsoft 365 apps. Copilot shows when Claude is answering, and in Researcher or "Edit with Copilot" users can pick Claude (Microsoft Learn).

The limits matter. Claude in Copilot is excluded from the EU Data Boundary, so EU, EFTA and UK tenants have it off by default unless an admin turns it on, and it is not offered in GCC High, DoD or sovereign clouds. Microsoft names Claude Fable 5.1 as available to certain organizations under Microsoft's terms, while models "with Data Retention", such as Claude Mythos 5, need a separate admin opt-in under Anthropic's terms (Microsoft Learn). Microsoft's Customer Copyright Commitment covers Claude models used in Copilot and Copilot Studio (same source).

Verdict by task

Office documents and email

Copilot wins. It is built into Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook on Microsoft 365 Personal and up (Copilot for Individuals), and at work its chat is grounded in your organization's data (Copilot Business pricing). Claude for Microsoft 365 brings Claude into Excel, PowerPoint and Word (generally available) and Outlook (beta), but only on Claude's paid plans and as add-ins you install (Claude for Microsoft 365).

Claude does have strong points there: it edits Word with tracked changes and updates Excel models "without breaking formulas" (same source); see Claude for Excel.

Writing and long documents

Claude wins on reach. Claude's plans read up to 1M tokens depending on the model, and its Projects and Artifacts suit long drafts. Microsoft's consumer pages do not state Copilot's context window or model (not found on Nov 6, 2026). No independent 2026 test compared the two on writing, so beyond length the choice is a matter of taste.

Coding

Claude wins in the consumer apps. Claude Code comes with every paid Claude plan, and with Claude Opus 5.5 it leads the public Terminal-Bench 4.0 board at 64.85%. Microsoft's coding product is GitHub Copilot, a separate subscription that itself offers Claude models; see Claude Code vs GitHub Copilot.

Research

Close, and it depends on the plan. Copilot's Researcher and Analyst agents come with Microsoft 365 Premium and Pro (Copilot for Individuals) and with Microsoft 365 Copilot at work, where Researcher can run on Claude (Microsoft Learn). Claude's Research is on every paid Claude plan, runs on Claude Opus 5.5 and cites its sources (Use research on Claude).

Images and voice

Copilot wins. Microsoft 365 Personal includes more image creation than the free app, and Premium "extensive usage" (Copilot for Individuals); Microsoft's MAI-Image-2.6 is sixth on Arena's text-to-image board. Claude generates no images (Can Claude produce images?). Copilot also offers visual help from your screen or camera on Personal; Claude's Voice Mode is a beta with a limited set of voices and no camera sharing mentioned (Use voice mode).

Price

Copilot wins for most people. The Copilot app is free, and $9.99 a month for Microsoft 365 Personal buys Office, 1 TB of storage and more Copilot use; Microsoft 365 Premium at $19.99 adds Researcher, Analyst and Cowork. Claude Pro at $20 includes no storage or Office apps. Note that Copilot in Microsoft 365 Family is for the subscription owner only. At work, Microsoft 365 Copilot is $30 per user a month on top of a Microsoft 365 license, against Claude Team's $20 or $25 per standard seat (Claude Team and Enterprise).

Privacy

Copilot is stricter in the Office apps; Claude gives a choice. Microsoft says prompts, responses and file contents in Copilot in Microsoft 365 apps for home "aren't used to train foundation models" (Microsoft Support); that page excludes the standalone Copilot app, which has its own terms. Claude trains on consumer chats unless you opt out, and never on Team or Enterprise data by default (Claude pricing; Claude Privacy and Data Use). For EU organizations, Claude inside Copilot falls outside Microsoft's EU Data Boundary (Microsoft Learn).

When to choose Microsoft Copilot

Choose Copilot if your day is in Outlook, Word, Excel and Teams, if your company already pays for Microsoft 365, or if you want Office, cloud storage and an assistant for under $10 a month. At work it is also an easy way to use Claude under Microsoft's contract, data handling and copyright commitment, with no separate Anthropic account.

When to choose Claude

Choose Claude if you want Anthropic's newest features first, a coding agent in Claude Code, or a long-context assistant outside Office. Claude's own apps also add Memory, Connectors, Claude in Chrome and Cowork, and Claude for Microsoft 365 still brings it into Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Outlook. For more options, see Claude Alternatives.
