Claude Code vs Cursor

Claude Code is Anthropic's coding agent for the terminal, IDEs and the cloud, included with Claude plans from $20 a month; Cursor is an AI code editor, owned by SpaceX since Aug 14, 2026, whose plans run from $8 and which can also run Claude models at Anthropic's list price on its $30 Premium plan and up.

Claude Code and Cursor answer different questions: Claude Code is an agent you hand a task to, from a terminal, an IDE panel, a desktop app or the cloud, while Cursor is a whole code editor with autocomplete, an agent and cloud agents built in, that lets you choose among many makers' models, Claude's included. Claude Code comes with Claude plans from $20 a month; Cursor's plans run from $8 to $200 a month, and Claude models in Cursor are billed at Anthropic's list price on Premium ($30) and above. Many developers use both: the Claude Code extension installs in Cursor.

Agent or editor

Claude Code started in the terminal and stays an agent: you describe a bug fix, a test suite or a migration and it reads the repository, edits files, runs commands and commits, asking permission first (Claude Code Permissions and Modes). Its IDE extensions for VS Code and JetBrains give it a panel with diffs and plan review, not an editor of its own (Claude Code in VS Code and JetBrains). It also runs where no editor is open: in CI with claude -p (Claude Code Headless and CI), in GitHub Actions, in cloud sessions started from a phone (Claude Code on the Web).

Cursor is the editor. Its Agent can "complete complex coding tasks independently, run terminal commands, and edit code" (Cursor Agent), with local checkpoints, steering a running agent, side chats, Projects that hand parts of a job to other agents, and a CLI. Cloud agents, formerly Background Agents, run "in isolated VMs in the cloud" on Premium and higher and can be started from the iOS app, Slack, GitHub, Linear or an API (Cloud agents). Tab, "Cursor's AI-powered autocomplete", suggests code as you type (Cursor Tab). Claude Code has nothing like Tab: if most of your day is typing code yourself, an editor with autocomplete fits it better.

Price

Claude Code is in every paid Claude plan: Pro at $20 a month or $17 billed annually, Max at $100 and Ultra at $200, with chat and coding drawing on one pool that resets every five hours and every week (Claude Usage Limits). There are no per-token charges on a subscription unless you turn on usage credits.

Cursor's individual plans on Nov 6, 2026: Free; Plus at $8, "Our introductory plan", which runs only Grok models; Premium at $30 with four times Plus's usage, cloud agents, code hosting, AI code reviews and third-party models; Super at $100 (15 times Plus) and Ultra at $200 (50 times Plus). Teams start at "$30+/user/month". Allowances "refresh weekly". The plans are the same tiers SpaceX sells as The X Subscription, which bundles Grok, Cursor and X Premium.

The difference that matters for Claude users: in Cursor, Claude models are third-party models, "billed separately at API list price" from prepaid credit (Cursor pricing). Cursor's prices match Anthropic's: Claude Opus 5.5 at $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output, Sonnet 5.5 at $2 and $10. A Claude subscription is usually the cheaper way to run a lot of Claude; Cursor's own Composer 2.5 ($0.50 and $2.50) and Grok 4.7 ($2 and $6) are cheaper per token than Claude Opus 5.5.

Models

Claude Code runs only Claude: Claude Opus 5.5 by default, with Claude Sonnet 5.5, Claude Haiku 5.5 and Claude Fable 5.1 to switch to (Model configuration). Cursor's model list is the widest of any coding tool: its own Composer models and Grok 4.5 to 4.7, every Claude model from Claude 4 Sonnet to Fable 5.1, OpenAI's GPT-5 line, Google's Gemini models through Gemini 4 Argon, and DeepSeek, Kimi, GLM and Meta's Muse models. Most third-party models are hidden until you turn them on, and Fable 5 and 5.1 need data retention approval for anyone with Privacy Mode on. If you want to compare makers on the same task, or switch when a new model lands, Cursor is the better home.

Benchmarks

No independent board scores the two products head to head. On Terminal-Bench 4.0, which rates harness and model together, Claude Code with Opus 5.5 led at 64.85% on Nov 6, 2026; Cursor's agent had no entry. Cursor publishes its own benchmark, CursorBench, and model makers report on it: Anthropic gives 57.8% for Opus 5.5 on CursorBench 4.0, and xAI's table gives 51.8% for Fable 5.1 and 46.3% for Grok 4.7. Those are makers' figures, not measurements of Cursor's agent against Claude Code. See Claude Benchmarks.

Popularity

The 2026 Stack Overflow Developer Survey asked which coding agents people had used in the past year: Claude Code 65.5%, Cursor 25.5%. As an editor, Cursor was used regularly by 14.9% of respondents against 70.9% for VS Code, and 33% of its users admired it. The question counts reach, not preference, and people could pick several.

Ownership and trust

SpaceX closed its purchase of Cursor in a deal TechCrunch reported at $60 billion in stock; Cursor announced it on Aug 14, 2026, in a post that highlights Grok and does not mention Claude. Its cheapest paid plan now runs only Grok models. Anyone choosing Cursor for Claude should expect Claude to stay a third-party option there, paid at list price.

One incident touched both products. On Oct 29, 2026, for about eleven hours, a maliciously modified copy of the Claude Code extension (versions 2.1.312 and 2.1.313) was available in Cursor's extension marketplace; it added an SSH key and tried to open a reverse tunnel. Cursor says it has no evidence that other versions or the official distribution were affected. If you installed the extension in Cursor that day, follow Cursor's notice.

When to choose Cursor

  • You write much of the code yourself and want autocomplete and an agent in one editor.
  • You want models from several makers, Claude among them, and to switch per task.
  • You want cloud agents started from Slack, GitHub, Linear or a phone inside the same product as your editor, or Cursor's code hosting and reviews.
  • You are on a budget and Grok models are enough: Plus is $8.

When to choose Claude Code

  • You hand off whole tasks and review the result: Claude Code is built for that and led Terminal-Bench 4.0 on Nov 6, 2026.
  • You use Claude models heavily: a Claude subscription covers them without per-token billing.
  • You work across terminals, CI, GitHub Actions, Slack and a phone, not only an editor.
  • You use JetBrains IDEs, Vim or another editor you would rather keep: Claude Code does not ask you to change editors.

You can also run both: the Claude Code extension installs in Cursor, and Claude Code's /init reads .cursor/rules/ and .cursorrules, while /import cursor brings Cursor's configuration across (Commands).

What reviewers found

In a Sep 3, 2025 video, Vishwas Gopinath of Codevolution compared the two on Claude Opus 4.1 and Sonnet 4, with plans and prices long since replaced. His verdict: Cursor makes you a faster coder, but Claude Code is the better tool for autonomous work such as whole features and multi-file refactors, and with both, "Claude Code builds the house. Cursor paints the walls." With money for only one, he picked Claude Code plus the free VS Code. He also found Claude Code clumsy for tiny edits, since it has no inline editing.

In a Lex Fridman Podcast clip posted on Feb 1, 2026, Lex Fridman said he uses Cursor and Claude Code about half and half because they are "fundamentally different experiences": Cursor for reading the diff and managing the details, Claude Code for guiding the work at "this macro level". His guest preferred a lighter VS Code plugin to stay in control. Fridman added that with the same model selected in each, Claude Code got more out of Claude Opus 4.5.

In a May 26, 2026 video, Theo Browne of Theo - t3․gg, who works mainly in Codex, called Cursor's cloud agents far ahead of most rivals: each spins up a full graphical Linux machine, runs the app and tests its changes with computer use, and can reply in a Slack thread with a video of the fix, which he said neither Claude Code nor Codex could match.

Frequently asked questions

Can Cursor use Claude? Yes. Cursor lists every current Claude model, including Claude Opus 5.5 and Fable 5.1, on its Premium plan ($30 a month) and above, billed at Anthropic's list price from prepaid credit; its $8 Plus plan runs only Grok models.

Is Claude Code cheaper than Cursor? For heavy use of Claude models, usually yes: Claude Pro at $20 a month includes Claude Code within its usage limits, while Cursor charges Claude tokens at API list price on top of its plan. For light use of cheaper models, Cursor's $8 Plus costs less.

Can I use Claude Code inside Cursor? Yes. Claude Code's VS Code extension also installs in Cursor, and the terminal CLI works in Cursor's terminal like any other.

Does Claude Code have tab completion like Cursor? No. Claude Code is an agent that edits files on request; it has no as-you-type autocomplete. Cursor's Tab does that.

Who owns Cursor? SpaceX, since Aug 14, 2026. Cursor is sold alongside Grok and X Premium in SpaceX's X Subscription plans.

Which is better for beginners, Claude Code or Cursor? Cursor looks like a familiar editor and shows every change in place, which suits people who want to watch and type; Claude Code suits people comfortable describing a task and reviewing a diff. Neither is free beyond a small Cursor allowance, and Claude Code needs a paid Claude plan.
