Claude Code vs Gemini CLI
Gemini CLI is Google's open source (Apache 2.0) terminal agent, but since Jun 18, 2026 it has no free tier and serves enterprise Gemini Code Assist users on Google Cloud, with free and Google AI plan users moved to Antigravity CLI; Claude Code is Anthropic's paid agent, from $20 a month, which led Terminal-Bench 4.0 on Nov 6, 2026.
Gemini CLI is no longer the free alternative to Claude Code it was in 2025: its README says free individual access and the Google AI Pro and Ultra plans moved to Antigravity CLI on Jun 18, 2026, and Gemini CLI itself is now "maintained for enterprise Gemini Code Assist workflows on Google Cloud", still fully open source under Apache 2.0. For a person comparing terminal agents today, the Google side is two products: Gemini CLI for companies on Google Cloud, and Antigravity CLI, which comes with Google Antigravity's free plan and Google AI Pro at $19.99. Claude Code has no free plan and starts with Claude Pro at $20 a month; on the one current independent board, Terminal-Bench 4.0, it led on Nov 6, 2026 and no Gemini 4 or Antigravity run appeared.

What changed in 2026
Until mid-2026 Gemini CLI was the terminal agent with the large free allowance, signed in with a personal Google account. On Jun 18, 2026 Google moved free individual use and the Google AI Pro and Ultra plans to Antigravity CLI, which its README calls an "Interactive multi-agent coding terminal" (gemini-cli). The Gemini CLI section of the README is now headed "No free tier or Google AI plans". Gemini CLI still signs in three ways: with Google, with a Gemini API key at usage-based billing, or through Vertex AI with a billing account. It ships a stable release every Tuesday, plus weekly previews and nightly builds.
The README also warns that Gemini CLI is "Not optimized for Gemini 4+": it is not tuned for Gemini 4 Argon or later releases. Anyone who wants Google's newest model in a terminal agent is pointed to Antigravity.
Price
Claude Code comes with Claude Pro at $20 a month ($17 billed annually), Max at $100 and Ultra at $200, and with Team and Enterprise seats; usage resets every five hours and every week and is shared with chat (Claude Usage Limits). Claude Free does not include it.
Google's ladder is almost the same: Google AI Pro at $19.99 a month, Ultra at $99.99 (five times Pro's limits) and $199.99 (twenty times). The difference is the bottom rung: Antigravity's Individuals plan is $0 with "a variety of agent models", unlimited Tab completions and command requests, and "Basic weekly rate limits". Google publishes no numbers for any of these limits; its plans page describes the free quota as "meaningful" and refreshed weekly, and Pro's as refreshed every five hours up to a weekly cap. Business use goes through Google Cloud from $30 a seat or pay as you go.
For pay-as-you-go use through an API, Google's Gemini API has a standing free tier on several Flash models; Anthropic offers new API users only "a small amount of free credits" (Pricing). Gemini 4 Argon has no free tier and costs $2 and $10 per million input and output tokens until Dec 1, 2026, then $4 and $20, the same as Claude Opus 5.5.
Models
Claude Code runs Claude models, Claude Opus 5.5 by default, each with a 1M-token context window (Model configuration). Gemini CLI runs Gemini models but, by its own README, is not tuned for the Gemini 4 series.
Antigravity runs Google's newest and, on paid plans, Anthropic's too. Its model list on Nov 6, 2026 offered Gemini 4 Argon on Pro, Ultra and Enterprise, Gemini 3.8 Flash on every plan, and Claude Sonnet 5.5 and Claude Opus 5.5 (Thinking) on Pro (not trials), Ultra and Enterprise. Free users also had Claude Sonnet 4.6 and Opus 4.6, but Google lists those for removal on Nov 18, 2026, after which Claude in Antigravity needs a paid plan.
Benchmarks
On the public Terminal-Bench 4.0 leaderboard, which scores agent and model together, Claude Code with Opus 5.5 held first place at 64.85% and Claude Code with Sonnet 5.5 second at 61.82% on Nov 6, 2026. No Gemini CLI, Antigravity or Gemini 4 run was listed; Google's best entry was a third-party harness, mini-SWE-agent, with Gemini 3.8 Flash at 19.09%. So there is no independent measurement of Google's own agents against Claude Code.
Google publishes its own table. It gives Gemini 4 Argon 57.1% and Claude Opus 5.5 59.6% on Terminal-Bench 4.0 as Artificial Analysis ran it, and its newer Gemini 4 Carbon 65.2%; Carbon is available only to selected cyber defenders. These are Google's figures. On Arena's WebDev board, people's votes put Claude Opus 5.5 first (1810), Gemini 4 Carbon fourth (1768, preliminary) and Gemini 4 Argon eleventh (1679) on Nov 6, 2026. Popularity
The 2026 Stack Overflow Developer Survey counted which coding agents people had used in the past year: Claude Code 65.5%, Google Antigravity 16.0% and Gemini Code Assist 14.6% (the survey's list did not name Gemini CLI separately). Antigravity is new: 62% of those using it as an editor admired it, the highest share of any editor in the survey, though only 0.4% used it regularly.
When to choose Gemini CLI or Antigravity
