Claude vs Perplexity
Perplexity is an answer engine built for cited web search and runs several makers' models, Claude Sonnet 5.5 among them; Claude is an assistant built for writing, coding and work with your files. As of Nov 6, 2026 Perplexity Pro costs $17 a month billed annually, the same as Claude Pro's annual price.
As of Nov 6, 2026, Perplexity is the better tool for looking things up with sources, and Claude is the better tool for making things: writing, code, analysis and documents. Perplexity is an answer engine: every answer comes from a web search with citations, and it routes each task to one of several makers' models, including Claude Sonnet 5.5 (Perplexity Pro). Claude is an assistant that can also search the web. CNET's 2026 roundup names Claude best overall and Perplexity best for research (CNET), and Zapier calls Perplexity the chatbot "for internet deep dives" (Zapier). Prices match at the entry tier: Perplexity Pro is $17 a month billed annually, and Claude Pro is $17 a month billed annually or $20 monthly.

Claude inside Perplexity
Perplexity Pro lists Claude Sonnet 5.5, "Anthropic's fast model", among the models it picks from, alongside OpenAI's, Google's and xAI's (Perplexity Pro). So a Perplexity answer may already be written by Claude, grounded in Perplexity's search. Perplexity's own pages disagree on the details: its help article, modified Oct 26, 2026, still names older models such as Claude Sonnet 4.6 and offers "Claude 4.5 Opus for Max users" (What is Perplexity Pro?); the product page is the newer source. Neither page lists Claude Opus 5.5, Anthropic's main model in its own apps.
Verdict by task
Search and fact-finding
Perplexity wins. It is built around search: answers come with citations, Pro adds "10x as many citations per answer", and its "Best" mode picks a model for you (What is Perplexity Pro?). Claude's Web Search also cites its sources and is on every plan, Free included, but Claude decides when to search rather than searching every time (Web search). No independent 2026 test measured the two on accuracy.
Deep research
Close. Perplexity Pro includes extended Research (What is Perplexity Pro?). Claude's Research, on paid plans, runs on Claude Opus 5.5 and searches the web and your connected tools, such as Gmail and Google Docs, in the same report (Use research on Claude). For research across your own email and files Claude has the edge; for the open web it is a matter of taste.
Writing and analysis
Claude wins. Claude's apps run Anthropic's strongest models at higher limits, read up to 1M tokens depending on the model, and add Projects, Artifacts and File Creation for Word, Excel and PowerPoint files. Claude Opus 5.5 is third on Arena's text board at 1509 and second on the Artificial Analysis index; Perplexity offers Claude Sonnet 5.5, which ranks 31st on Arena's text board.
Coding
Claude wins. Claude Code comes with every paid Claude plan, and with Opus 5.5 it leads the public Terminal-Bench 4.0 board at 64.85%. Perplexity lists no coding agent; its Perplexity Computer "creates personalized apps, tools, docs, and more" (Perplexity Pro).
Browsing for you
Perplexity wins on reach. Comet, Perplexity's own browser, runs on Mac, Windows, iOS and Android, and its assistant drafts emails, builds sites and shops (Comet); Max raises its weekly limit on browser agent tasks (Perplexity Max). Claude in Chrome is an extension on paid Claude plans that reads, clicks and fills forms in Chrome or Claude's own browser, and asks before purchases (Claude in Chrome).
Images
Perplexity wins. Pro includes "Enhanced image generation" and limited video tools (What is Perplexity Pro?). Claude does not generate photos or illustrations (Can Claude produce images?).
Price
Even at the entry tier, Claude cheaper at the top. Both Pro plans cost $17 a month billed annually; Claude Pro also sells monthly at $20, while Perplexity's pages showed no monthly Pro price on Nov 6, 2026. Perplexity Max costs $200 a month, the same as Claude Ultra, and Claude also offers Claude Max at $100. Perplexity was running limited-time offers on Nov 6, 2026, including free Computer credits with Pro and Max (Perplexity Pro).
Privacy
Similar. Perplexity uses search data to improve its AI unless you turn off "AI Data Usage" in Settings (Perplexity Help Center), and its Enterprise plans guarantee no training (Perplexity Enterprise pricing). Claude trains on consumer chats unless you opt out in Settings > Privacy, and not on Team or Enterprise data by default (Claude pricing; Claude Privacy and Data Use).
When to choose Perplexity
Choose Perplexity if your main use is finding and checking facts, comparing products, or following a topic with sources you can click. It also suits people who want several makers' models behind one search box, a dedicated AI browser in Comet, or image generation in the same plan.
When to choose Claude
Choose Claude if you write, code or analyze documents, or want an assistant that works with your own email, calendar and files through Connectors. Claude's plans give direct access to Claude Opus 5.5 and Fable 5.1, which Perplexity's product page does not list. Many people use both: Perplexity to find, Claude to make. For more options, see Claude Alternatives.
What reviewers found
In a May 15, 2026 video on stretching Claude's usage limits, The AI Productivity Coach suggested running deep research in another tool first, naming Perplexity among others, then handing the finished report to Claude, which spends far fewer tokens reading it than it would researching. It is a workflow tip, not a test of either product.
