Claude Status and Outages
To check whether Claude is down, open status.claude.com, Anthropic's official status page, which tracks claude.ai, the Claude Console, the Claude API, Claude Code, Claude Cowork and Claude for Government separately. On Nov 6, 2026 it showed all systems operational.
To find out whether Claude is down, open status.claude.com, Anthropic's official status page: it shows the live state of six separate services (claude.ai, the Claude Console, the Claude API, Claude Code, Claude Cowork and Claude for Government) and every incident Anthropic has declared, with timed updates. When Nov 6, 2026 was read, it said "All Systems Operational", with no incidents reported from Nov 1 to Nov 6 (Claude Status, read Nov 6, 2026). If the page is green but Claude is failing for you, the problem is more often your plan's usage limit, your network or an app version than an outage.
Quick facts
| Official status page | status.claude.com |

What the components mean
Each line on the status page is a separate service, so one can fail while the others work (Claude Status, read Nov 6, 2026):
| Component | What it covers |
|---|---|
| claude.ai | The chat apps: web, desktop and mobile |
| Claude Console (platform.claude.com) | The developer dashboard: API keys, billing, the workbench (Claude Console) |
| Claude API (api.anthropic.com) | The Claude API that developers and other apps call |
| Claude Code | The coding agent, Claude Code |
| Claude Cowork | Claude's agent mode for files and tasks, Cowork |
| Claude for Government | The FedRAMP High service for US government customers (Anthropic, Oct 27, 2026) |
A component is shown as Operational, Degraded Performance, Partial Outage, Major Outage or Maintenance. An incident moves through Investigating, Identified, Monitoring and Resolved; the page does not define those words, but as on most status pages they mean the problem is being looked into, the cause is found, a fix is out and being watched, and it is over.
Claude used through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud or Microsoft Foundry runs on those providers' infrastructure, so check their own status pages too.
What to do when Claude is down
- Check status.claude.com for the component you use. If it shows an incident, the fix is on Anthropic's side: wait for the Resolved update.
- If everything is green, check your own limit. A message about reaching your limit is not an outage; see Claude Usage Limits and How to Make Claude Usage Limits Last.
- Try another surface. The web app, desktop app and mobile apps share an account, so one may work while another has a client problem.
- Switch models. Recent incidents hit single models, so picking another model in the model menu often works.
- In Claude Code, run
/statusto see your version, model, account and connectivity (Commands, read Nov 6, 2026). - Subscribe to updates on the status page (email, SMS, Slack, Teams, webhook or feed) so you hear when it is fixed.
Errors on the Claude API
API errors carry a code that says whose problem it is (Claude API errors, read Nov 6, 2026):
| Code | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
429 rate_limit_error |
Your rate limit or spend cap | Slow down or raise your tier; see Claude API Rate Limits |
500 api_error |
An error inside Anthropic's systems | Retry with backoff |
504 timeout_error |
The request timed out | Stream long requests, or use batches |
529 overloaded_error |
The API is temporarily overloaded across all users | Retry later; check the status page |
The official SDKs retry connection errors, 429s and server errors twice by default with exponential backoff, and honor the retry-after header (Claude API errors). Every error includes a request_id to give support.
Notable incidents
The status page lists each incident Anthropic declares. Late Oct 2026 was busy: on Oct 24 there were elevated errors for Claude Opus 5.5, for Claude Fable 5 and Claude Fable 5.1, and for Fable 5.1, Claude Sonnet 5.5 and Claude Haiku 5.5 together; on Oct 25 for Fable 5.1 and for Sonnet 5.5 with other models; on Oct 27 two incidents for Sonnet 5.5; and on Oct 28 for the Gmail and Google Calendar Connectors (Claude Status, read Nov 6, 2026). Anthropic's page gives the 90-day uptime percentage per component on its "View historical uptime" view, which could not be read for this page on Nov 6, 2026.
Capacity, more than outright outages, has been the larger complaint. On May 6, 2026 Anthropic acknowledged that rising consumer use had strained its infrastructure and hurt reliability at peak hours, and in response doubled Claude Code's five-hour limits for paid plans and removed the peak-hours reduction on Pro and Max, citing new compute from SpaceX (Higher usage limits and a SpaceX compute deal, May 6, 2026).
A different kind of outage came from outside: on Jun 12, 2026 Anthropic switched off Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 for every customer after a government export control directive, and restored them at the end of the month (Anthropic, Jun 12, 2026). See Anthropic.
Frequently asked questions
Is Claude down right now? Check status.claude.com, Anthropic's official Claude status page, which shows live status for claude.ai, the API, Claude Code and the other services. On Nov 6, 2026 it showed all systems operational.
Why is Claude not working when the status page is green? Claude may be working while you have hit your plan's usage limit, or the problem may be your network, browser or app version. Try another device or model, and check your limit in Settings > Usage.
What does "Claude is at capacity" or a 529 error mean? A 529 overloaded_error means the Claude API is temporarily overloaded across all users; it is Anthropic's problem, not yours, and retrying after a short wait usually works.
How do I get notified of Claude outages? On status.claude.com, choose Subscribe to Updates and pick email, SMS, Slack, Microsoft Teams, a webhook or an RSS or Atom feed.
Does Claude Code have its own status? Yes. Claude Code is its own component on status.claude.com, separate from claude.ai and the Claude API, and running /status inside Claude Code shows your connection and account.
